Newcastle 0 Arsenal 1 – Match ratings and comments on all NUFC players

We asked Jonathan Drape-Comyn to give us his match ratings after Newcastle 0 Arsenal 1.

A game where Newcastle were given every chance due to early season selection problems for the visitors.

However, the Magpies could never really build any pressure and although both Shelvey and Joelinton put chances just wide in the first half, the Arsenal keeper didn’t have a serious save to make.

Dubravka – 7: Didn’t have a whole lot to do and couldn’t do anything about the goal.

Looked somewhat ‘flappy’ and hesitant at times in the first half.

Schar – 7: Another one who had a half-decent game but didn’t exactly shine.

Lascelles – 6: Was stretched and dragged all over by Aubameyang at times, as he got in behind on a few occasions.

Dummett – 5: Gave the ball away for the goal and ultimately let the side down with a lapse of concentration.

Manquillo – 6: Had a decent game defensively but certainly doesn’t offer the side half as much going forward compared with Yedlin.

Ritchie – 5: There is giving your all and then there is running around like a headless chicken with needless challenges, sliding all over the place and remonstrating with the referee at every opportunity.

I wasn’t impressed – and quite frankly, after his Talksport comments, I couldn’t care less if he ever plays for Newcastle again.

Longstaff – 7: Didn’t put a foot wrong and looked a similar player to the one we had before he got injured last season.

Let’s hope he can stay fit and keep up that level of performance.

Shelvey – 7: Did alright and looked bright at times.

Not sure why he was hooked off, if it wasn’t for an injury then I really can’t make much sense of that.

Then again, I’m not Steve Bruce and don’t have his magnificent managerial pedigree of winning fu.. all, so what do I know?

Hayden – 7: Like Shelvey and Longstaff, he did ok, but it must be said that none of the three got near Guendouzi for the whole game, who dominated all three of them at times.

Almiron – 5: Probably a harsh rating because he played well and looked sharp, probably our most attacking player, but gave him a 5 for a horrific dive which was embarrassing. No place for that in a Newcastle shirt.

Joelinton – 6: Had one great moment where he hit a shot straight at Leno but apart from that the ball just didn’t stick.

SUBS

Willems – 6: Can’t even remember him touching the ball if I’m honest.

Saint-Maxime – 6: Looked tricky and pacey but didn’t make enough of an impact.
