Confirmed Newcastle team v St Etienne – Joelinton, Dubravka, Almiron, Aarons all start
The Newcastle team v St Etienne has just been confirmed.
Newcastle kicking off their final pre-season friendly on Saturday afternoon at 3pm.
The game will be Steve Bruce’s third in charge on the touchline.
So far in pre-season we have seen an embarrassing 4-0 hammering by Wolves over in China, which then saw improvement when beating West Ham 1-0 with a Muto goal.
Newcastle lost 2-1 at Preston last Saturday, leading 1-0 at half-time but then missing a penalty.
Preston going on to score two spot-kicks of their own to win the game.
However, a much better display on Tuesday night saw Joelinton and Sean Longstaff score very good goals in a 3-1 win over Hibs.
Despite suggesting earlier that Jetro Willems would start, Steve Bruce has instead left him and Allan Saint-Maximin on the bench.
Good to see Martin Dubravka back in goal after only featuring in one of the four other friendlies.
The same as Tuesday night, this looks more or less the first choice team, given that last night’s signings have just arrived.
Fernandez plays instead of Dummett as one of the three centre-backs, whilst in the absence of Matt Ritchie, Rolando Aarons plays left wing-back.
I can’t help but wonder if it is going to be bad news on Ritchie with Jetro Willems signed, still no announcement by the club on Ritchie despite his hamstring injury being picked up four days ago.
This is today’s Newcastle team v St Etienne:
Dubravka, Manquillo, Schar, Lascelles, Fernandez, Aarons, Hayden, Shelvey, (S) Longstaff, Almiron, Joelinton
Darlow, Sterry, Clark, Dummett, Willems, Ki, M. Longstaff, Murphy, Atsu, Saint-Maximin, Mutō
