Blyth Spartans official statement confirms signing of former Newcastle United winger

A bit of a coup for Blyth Spartans.

They have announced on Friday morning that Callum Roberts has signed for them.

The 22 year old winger was not offered a new contract by Newcastle United in the summer but was expected to be quickly snapped up.

Apart from a game and goal against Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup last season, the winger had struggled for first team action in recent years.

However, he had excelled for the NUFC second string with goals and assists.

No disrespect to Blyth Spartans but they operate in the sixth tier of English football currently and I thought Callum Roberts would have gone to at least a League Two side, if not League One. Whilst he was also regularly linked with Greek club Panathinaikos.

Blyth Spartans official statement:

Blyth Spartans are delighted to announce the signing of former Newcastle United winger Callum Roberts.

The 22-year-old joined the Magpies academy at the age of eight and moved up through every age group.

On January 3, 2015, Roberts made his first-team debut during a 1-0 FA Cup third round defeat to Leicester City as a second-half substitute.

Soon after his senior bow, Roberts had a brief loan spell at Gateshead before returning to Newcastle to become a leading player in the under-23s set-up.

Roberts then furthered his senior education when current Blyth Spartans manager Lee Clark took him north of the border to Kilmarnock in 2017.

And after a string of standout performances in the under-23s run to the quarter-finals of the Checkatrade Trophy last season, Roberts was handed his second first team bow, which would prove to be an extra memorable occasion.

In an FA Cup third round replay at Ewood Park in January, Roberts netted his first-ever senior goal in front of the BT Sport cameras, volleying home a Jacob Murphy cross from inside the penalty area.

A short loan spell at League Two outfit Colchester United followed before leaving the Magpies in the summer after 14 years at the club.’

Callum Roberts via his Twitter account:

“Would like to thank everyone associated with Newcastle United for my time at the club.

“From progressing through every age group to playing and scoring in the first team is things I will never forget.

“I would also like to thank all the coaching staff and players I have played with, for making me the player and person I am today.

“When one door closes another always opens and I’m already looking forward to the future.

“Again thank you and all the best.”
