Andy Carroll has agreed personal terms and one year contract with Newcastle United – The Times
News emerged on Thursday morning that Andy Carroll was a live target for Newcastle United.
A bit like a broken clock, eventually we would arrive at a transfer window where the media would be proved correct and indeed NUFC were actively looking to sign their former striker.
It only took them seventeen (transfer windows) for it to happen.
Multiple media sources this deadline day morning saying that both player and club want a deal to happen for the free agent.
Now Oliver Kay – Chief Football Correspondent with The Times, has reported that personal terms have been agreed and an initial one year contract put in place.
Though Oliver Kay doesn’t mention it, clearly this will be on the proviso that Andy Carroll can pass the medical…
If the signing does indeed happen, then his actual value to Newcastle United will all depend, as usual, on the striker getting fit…and staying fit and available.
The Mail have followed up The Times story with a report saying that Andy Carroll has now passed his medical, if true, surely the most remarkable thing you will hear this window!
Other reports claiming that the one year contract agreed, is a basic wage and much of the cash depending on pay as you play.
Oliver Kay – Chief Football Correspondent with The Times:
“Looks like it’s full steam ahead for Andy Carroll’s return to Newcastle.
“He has agreed personal terms. Initial one-year contract.
“I know they say “Never go back”, but he’ll be utterly ecstatic about rejoining Newcastle United.”
The Mag – Earlier today (Thursday 8 August 2019):
Andy Carroll could be a Newcastle United player by the end of today.
Yes, the prodigal son could return, some eight years and seven months after leaving in a helicopter.
Mike Ashley banking an incredible £35m in a transfer fee that was partly dictated by how much Chelsea paid (£50m) for the outgoing Torres in January 2011.
This transfer window had (as usual) seen Andy Carroll linked with a return to Newcastle and just over two weeks ago fresh claims of a possible deal were reported.
Now on deadline day morning, multiple sources say that talks have been held and both sides want the deal to happen…
Craig Hope – The Mail:
I’m told Andy Carroll to NUFC is more likely to happen than not & player desperate to rejoin hometown club.’
Pete Graves – Sky Sports:
‘A big surprise on the horizon perhaps? 50/50.’
Lee Ryder – Chronicle:
‘Newcastle United are believed to be in discussions over move for Andy Carroll today.
Not done yet. Checks on his fitness going on. But Carroll eager for it to happen.’
Scott Wilson – Northern Echo:
‘Even though he can sign outside the window, I think the preference is for it to be resolved one way or the other today.
I’m told the deal will almost certainly stand or fall on the #NUFC medical team’s assessment of the striker’s reconstructive ankle surgery…’
As a free agent now, Andy Carroll could be signed afterwards, so the 5pm deadline doesn’t apply to him.
However, the various reports state that both club and player want to get the deal done and dusted today, if it is going to happen.
Carroll is said to be happy to take a wage cut (although technically his current wage is zero as he left West Ham over five weeks ago..) and Newcastle’s main concern is being reassured that the striker is physically ok, having recovered from his most recent injury.
Only 17 transfer windows later, each of them claiming he could come back, this time it could be the reality.
