Sky Sports update on Sean Longstaff talks between Man Utd and Newcastle United makes no sense
Sky Sports have provided an update on the situation surrounding Sean Longstaff.
The midfielder has been linked with Manchester United throughout the Summer, although always questionable just how much substance there was in the claims/reports.
Indeed, despite repeated claims that he would be on the plane to Australia when it left at the weekend, Sean Longstaff is still at Newcastle’s training ground rather than with the Manchester United squad down under.
Wednesday night has now brought this slightly bizarre update from Sky Sports (see below).
They stat that Newcastle United and Man Utd ‘have held high-level talks about Sean Longstaff’ in recent days.
However, at the same time, the brief report/update goes on to claim that ‘Newcastle are categorically not interested in selling Longstaff’…
Surely a massive contradiction in what they are claiming, as why would you hold ‘high-level talks’ with another club, if you’re ‘categorically not interested’ in selling him?
Whilst he undoubtedly did well when getting his chance last season, Sean Longstaff has still only made eight starts in the Premier League. I have never felt this was a deal that could happen as there is so little for a buying club to go on, so no chance of Man Utd offering anything like enough to get Mike Ashley interested in selling, not when he thinks of how much more the 21 year could be worth if rubber stamping last season’s eight PL starts with a very good 2019/20 season in the Premier League.
My best guess is that this is more of a Sky Sports doing Mike Ashley a favour type story, within their cosy mutual back scratching arrangement. Putting the story out that that Mike Ashley ‘categorically’ won’t sell Newcastle’s best young talent blah blah blah.
Sky Sports have already done the NUFC owner a favour by completely ignoring the joint statement by a large number of Newcastle United fan groups on Tuesday, the statement going out to all media, with calls for Newcastle fans to boycott the club whilst Mike Ashley remains in control.
Sky Sports report/update:
‘Sean Longstaff talks held between Manchester United and Newcastle
Manchester United and Newcastle have held high-level talks about Sean Longstaff but no official bid has yet been made, according to Sky sources.
The talks were held last weekend but Sky Sports News understands Newcastle are categorically not interested in selling Longstaff and see him as a big part of their future plans.
Longstaff, 21, made nine Premier League appearances last season, scoring once, before knee ligament damage ruled him out for the rest of the season in March.
Manchester United have already signed two home-grown youngsters in Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bisaaka.’
