Sheffield Wednesday fans comment on Steve Bruce set to join Newcastle United

Sheffield Wednesday fans have been reacting to the news that Steve Bruce is reported to be set to take over at Newcastle United.

The Owls boss backed down to odds on favourite with the bookies and said to be set to speak to Mike Ashley’s people imminently.

Reports of compensation range from £1m to £4m if Newcastle reach agreement with Steve Bruce.

Fair to say Newcastle supporters haven’t shown much ‘enthusiasm’ to the idea, especially taking into account his dismal record in the Premier League.

What about Sheffield Wednesday fans though, how have they responded to the reports…?

Sheffield Wednesday fans commenting via their Owls Talk message board:

‘Very disappointing if Bruce joins the Geordies.

I won’t blame him given his home town club come calling with higher wages and the chance to manage in the premier league again.

The timing is terrible just 3 weeks before the season after he has already brought in 3 of his own players.

Its a strange scenario as he’s the perfect fit for us but for Newcastle, I’m not sure.

It’s a big comedown for Newcastle fans to have Bruce in charge after Rafa.’

‘Can understand the pull factors but doesn’t change the view that he’s let us down massively.’

‘What budget will he get at Newcastle?

Ashley in it for the money, he doesnt give a fizz about the club.’

‘As if this is not not bad enough I think it heightens the chance of Newcastle finishing below the grunters (Sheff Utd)- not necessarily as I think Bruce is not up to the job, but the fans will be up in arms and it will be a club in disarray.’

‘We really, really don’t need this right now. Such a shame IF they approach because he’ll definitely go.’

‘I thought Bruce to be quite smart?

If Ashley does sell Newcastle it will have to be someone like the cousin of Man city owners as they seem to be the only one with enough cash.

With the money they will want to throw at it they will want a manager who can attract the really top players. That is not going to be Bruce.

On the other side if they start like they did under Allardyce and there is every possibility of that happening, it will become toxic in no time up there.’

‘Let’s be right, I’d be surprised (and if I was a Newcastle fan I’d be disappointed) but if he gets offered it no one can blame him for taking it.’

‘i’m not naive enough to think that the bloke wouldn’t want to take a massive pay rise and a chance to manage in the PL again. But given his interviews where he talked about his time at Villa, his parents, his mental well being + I’m fairly certain he even mentioned that money isn’t everything to him.

I’d lose a bit of respect for him for jumping into a poisoned chalice where he’ll be pelted from day one…all for money basically. I don’t buy into this “it’s his club” gonads. End of the day, how many times has he actually followed them during his busy career?

Poor form.’

‘Would prefer if he was just honest and said he wanted to move to his boyhood club. He’s ultimately going to fail there though, the atmosphere is toxic. If he thought Villa fans were bad then wait until he walks out at St James Park!’

‘If bruce does go which i dont think he will, he would stiched us up big time.’

‘A series of big names, including Jose Mourinho, Arsene Wenger, Patrick Vieira and Steven Gerrard, have distanced themselves from the job.

Not that great a .job then?’

‘Strange ain’t it as a neutral and a non football expert you know Newcastle should be a no go zone for any manager and player whilst Ashley is there, you’d think Bruce would be aware of that.

Plus Newcastle fans don’t want him.’

‘He’d be an utter fool to go to Newcastle. Bonkers club for any manager to touch right now.’

‘Hope we don’t go for McClaren if he goes!’

‘Flip me, a lot of people are acting like he’s already gone. Cool your jets until he’s *actually* left, otherwise you’ll be all flounced out before the real fun begins.’

‘For what it’s worth the whole (Sheff Wed) squad including management just come through airport except Bruce.’

‘Still hoping that the Geordie reactions put him off or praying that it’s all a smokescreen for someone else…’

‘Club/Bruce have had 24 hours to put this one to bed. He’s clearly off. Time to make life as difficult as possible for Bruce and Newcastle, rinse Ashley dry and get looking for a new manager asap.’

‘I don’t blame Bruce for leaving, Newcastle has its attractions to him. But for me to go and work for Mike Ashley ahead of staying with us, is a real concern.’

Think Benitez may have some advice on broken promises and lack of cooperation from the owner , grass not always greener Stevie ole lad.’

‘If it means Chris Hughton replaces Bruce, it could prove a blessing.’

‘The best manager we’ve had in 25 years is probably leaving us but we’re supposed to just shrug our shoulders?’
