Ray Parlour slaughters Mike Ashley for forcing Rafa Benitez out “That is where Newcastle should be”

Ray Parlour has been talking about Rafa Benitez leaving Newcastle United.

The former Arsenal and England player says that the ‘magnificent’ Newcastle fans will be ‘boiling’ after Mike Ashley forced the manager out.

Ray Parlour declaring: ‘I am amazed they are going to let a manager just walk away, when he wanted to stay. You have to back managers like that. Rafa Benitez is asking the board at Newcastle, saying ‘I have proved I can manage over the years, now I need a bit of backing.’

Parlour can see just how frustrating it is for supporters, saying at very least Mike Ashley should be backing his manager to compete with the likes of Leicester for signings.

The player turned pundit says he is sure Rafa Benitz will have gone into his post-season meeting with Mike Ashley and laid out a three year plan of how to progress the team/club, with some investment needed in now to get the project up and running.

With Ashley making clear he had no interest in doing so, Ray Parlour states: ‘If they say we can’t back you I can see…what is the point of him even staying there? He is always fighting against the club.’

That perfectly sums up these last few years for Rafa Benitez, doing everything he can to make Newcastle United better BUT having to fight against Mike Ashley to do so.

Ray Parlour speaking on Talksport:

“I’m sure those Newcastle fans will be boiling, their heads will be boiling, because he is a brilliant manager.

“People say they underachieved, well they did as a club. They should be doing better. The support they have got is magnificent.

Rafa Benitez saw the passion of the fans and he really wanted to do well for Newcastle.

“They have been in relegation battles…they haven’t gone out and bought the players.

“I am sure Rafa would have gone to the meeting  with the owner and said: ‘Look, we have to have a plan here, a three year plan of putting a bit of money in and try to get in that top six.’ That is what they deserve as football fans…and they are not getting it from the owner.

“It must be so frustrating for the fans because they want to see a little bit of investment.

“Look at Leicester, they go out and buy players, they are trying to compete.

“Everton are trying to buy players and compete.

“That is where Newcastle should be.

“I am amazed they are going to let a manager just walk away, when he wanted to stay. You have to back managers like that.

“As a manager you can’t, you have to work together at a football club.”
