No wonder the club unveiled this Newcastle United squad for Asia Trophy at 3am this morning!
I turned on my phone first thing this morning and checked the NUFC news as always.
Nothing good of course but then we have got used to it over the course of this Summer.
There didn’t seem to be anything of note, just the same recycled garbage from yesterday and the rest of the week.
Then I noticed it hidden away, no wonder I nearly missed it as the story had gone out at 3am this morning, the club announcing the Newcastle United squad that is flying to China on Saturday.
Obviously, the rule is that if you have bad news to put out, time it for when you know there is going to be loads of other stuff happening in the media as well. So that the impact of the negative news is diluted, not as many people noticing, reading it, or at worst, not spending as much time on it as they otherwise would have.
The next best route is to put out your bad news at a time when not many people are about, like 3am in the morning…
The Newcastle United squad that was announced is:
Martin Dubravka, Ciaran Clark, Paul Dummett, Ki Sung-yueng, Fabian Schar, Jamaal Lascelles, Jacob Murphy, Jonjo Shelvey, Dwight Gayle, Matt Ritchie, Yoshinori Muto, Isaac Hayden, Rolando Aarons, Federico Fernández, Javier Manquillo, Joselu, Jack Colback, Jamie Sterry, Karl Darlow, Freddie Woodman, Nathan Harker, Achraf Lazaar, Sean Longstaff, Matthew Longstaff, Owen Bailey, Kelland Watts, Tom Allan
By my reckoning I would divide this travelling Newcastle United squad up as:
Happy to see as first team regulars this season:
Sean Longstaff, Martin Dubravka, Paul Dummett, Fabian Schar, Jamaal Lascelles, Matt Ritchie, Isaac Hayden
Good first team back-up/bench:
Ciaran Clark, Ki Sung-yueng, Jonjo Shelvey, Dwight Gayle, Federico Fernández,
Javier Manquillo, Karl Darlow, Yoshinori Muto
Players who definitely need to move on:
Achraf Lazaar, Jacob Murphy, Rolando Aarons, Joselu, Jack Colback, Jamie Sterry
Young players still to get chance to prove themselves:
Freddie Woodman, Nathan Harker, Matthew Longstaff, Owen Bailey, Kelland Watts, Tom Allan
This squad above should have had a manager in charge for starters, Rafa Benitez or failing that another quality manager, not Steve Bruce!
Also, if you had Rondon, Perez, plus at least four or five other new signings then you start to have a bit of a squad…but this????
To have Joselu, Colback, Aarons and Lazaar on that plane tomorrow is just soul destroying.
Mike Ashley has really really done it this time.
The position the club finds itself in now, how can anybody think we can pull back from the impending disaster this season is going to be?
If Steve Bruce is Ashley’s idea of a new manager/head coach, can you imagine what level we are going to be signing players from???
