Newcastle United winger sent home after injury proves to be more serious than expected

On Saturday night ,Christian Atsu and Ghana were up against Cameroon in their second group game at the African Cup of Nations. A tame game saw a combined total of only three efforts on target as both sides settled for a 0-0 draw, with both countries set to qualify for the knockout stages.

Cameroon now all but through with four points, whilst Ghana only need to beat the weakest side in the group, Guinea-Bissau to go through, as they have two points from their opening two games. Ghana taking on Guinea-Bissau later today.

Christian Atsu won’t be involved though.

The Newcastle winger hit a long range effort just wide in the 15th minute of Saturday’s game but injured himself  in the process and was forced off.

It was hoped that the injury might prove to be only minor but instead Ghana have now announced the Newcastle winger is not only ruled out of today’s match – but also the whole tournament.

Christian Atsu will now return to Tyneside for treatment on his hamstring injury and watch the rest of Ghana’s African Cup of Nations on TV.

The tournament has another three weeks to run (final on 19 July) so Atsu was always going to miss a significant part of Newcastle’s pre-season.

However, with the AFCON tournament running for these next three weeks and Ghana having made such a quick/early decision that he is ruled out for its entirety, Atsu could be struggling to be involved when Newcastle kick off their season only three weeks after the AFCON final.
