Hibs fans comments about Newcastle United and the supporters after 3-1 defeat – Interesting
Tuesday night ended up being a decent game all round, for both Hibs fans and Newcastle supporters, judging by the comments afterwards.
Pre-match there had been rumours of a low crowd under 5,000 but as it turned out, a healthy 12,000+ paid to watch this pre-season friendly, including around 3,000 in the away end.
For the travelling fans, they saw a very good Joelinton performance capped with a good goal, an excellent strike outside the box from Sean Longstaff, with captain Jamaal Lascelles completing the scoring for Newcastle. A much better display, once the team had bounced back from going behind and losing Ritchie early on.
As for the Hibs fans, they were buoyed by that early excellent Mallan goal that gave them the lead but despite then being second best for most of the rest of the 90 minutes, they still appreciated the display of their own players.
Judging by the comments below, it is just a general acceptance of the gulf in resources, as one of the Hibs fans summed it up: ‘Newcastle just bought a striker for £40m. Someone just bought Hibs for £3.5m.’
The good news for Newcastle fans is that the opposition supporters were very impressed with Joelinton and had a lot of other positives about the visiting side.
Still only a friendly but a lot better than hearing what Preston fans had to say after Saturday!
Hibs are probably around about lower League One level when comparing to English football, so no reason to get too carried away.
However, there were a lot of positives and it is just whether they can be translated into the Premier League now.
‘I thought we played quite well. Newcastle are obviously a much stronger team, although I expect they’ll struggle to stay up. Shelvey was class and their new guy looks good.’
‘Thought they looked good particularly first half when we gave their midfield way too much space, emphasised when Longstaff was able to take about 4 touches at the edge of our box with no one pressing him. The movement of Joelinton and Almiron first half was very good.’
‘Would love for us to go down to Newcastle for a friendly. We’d take similar numbers. Was it not around 1500 at Carlisle on a Tuesday night?’
‘Yup – I reckon 3000 would easily travel at a weekend for a friendly. Most EPL teams don’t play many home games as all about the £££ abroad this days like tours of China etc.
Can’t remember the last Scottish team to play an EPL away friendly ??’
‘Joelinton looked amazing. Might pop him in my dream team work league this season.’
‘It was clear to see that Newcastle were a good bit out of our league so it was a good workout for the team, even if nobody is really sure what the actual first choice team is going to be.
Oh, and for any Newcastle fans looking in … ‘Ole’ against a team you should expect to beat without breaking sweat … really? I cant help thinking that’s what will be going through my head when you are getting pumped at Anfield or the Etihad on MOTD next season.’
‘It was the visitors who triumphed with a comfortable 3-1 win in front of a more than decent crowd including an impressive travelling support.
It was a good workout for both sides but the gulf in quality was always apparent.
Newcastle, who had their new £40m signing Joelinton leading the line, recovered from going a goal down to pretty much dominate the rest of the game. Just think about that for a moment – a signing that cost millions more than our whole club is worth and it was no surprise that he had an outstanding seventy minutes against a defence that struggled with his pace and movement.’
‘Plenty Newcastle fans kicking around up town.’
‘Some are wearing very little and i don’t mean the lads.’
‘The Marksman over flowing with Newcastle fans, the ladies are living up to the stereotype clothes wise!’
‘Thought that £40m boy always found himself in space brilliantly. Don’t think I’ve ever seen a player play on the brink of being offside that well before. Lost count of how many times he ran past our defence. Guess thats what mega money gets you.’
‘Thought Newcastle were very good. Suppose it shows the quality that the Premier League has these days.’
‘I was pleasantly surprised at the number of Hibs fans tonight as I honestly thought we’d struggle to reach 5,000. The Newcastle fans were noisy and supportive.’
‘Shelvey on his day is unplayable and one of the best passers in England. If Hibs were to play them again he couldn’t be allowed that much space and time on ball.
Newcastle players just looked fitter and stronger all over.’
‘The guy up front for them just cost 40m. The guy who scored the second is being linked with Man Utd for £50m.
I thought we did all right at times. Worth noting we never had our strongest team on the park at any point either.’
‘I must admit I really enjoyed watching players of such ability. They were bigger, stronger faster and more skillful than us but we hung on in there and played with determination and at times no little ability.’
‘Boy at 40 Mil is nothing special. These prices are ridiculous these days. We done ok.’
‘Happy enough with that overall. Won’t face a better team all season.’
‘Newcastle just bought a striker for £40m.
Someone just bought Hibs for £3.5m.
Tells a story eh!!’
‘A good run out, we will be better for it. Chased shadows most of the night, but tried to play some football when we had the ball.
The defenders looked to be moving the ball across and back a little quicker, probably because they were being shut down more than the previous games.
There was a huge gulf in quality and we didnt suffer a humping.’
‘Not unexpected, Newcastle strolled the game and a wee learning curve for a few players. Not going to criticise anyone tonight as they wont come up against a team that good all season.’
‘I mentioned to my wife that Newcastle have a player that cost £40 million…she said “blimey he must be worth his weight in gold”….I worked it out, if he is 14 stone then his weight in gold is only just over £4 million at current gold prices. So he’s actually worth 10 times his weight in gold !! That’s EPL football for you !!’
‘The entire group of Newcastle fans around the cameraman’s location appeared to be spectacle wearing hipster millennials – all of whom were continuously chanting at the East stand “Fu.. the IRA”
They deserve Mike Ashley AND Steve Bruce.
‘Men against boys for the most part. Newcastle well in control of the game. Hibs had no cutting edge. We need another striker or two.
If Hearts had played them, Newcastle would have put at least 7 past that lot.’
