Ayoze Perez passes medical and £30m sale by Newcastle United to be announced today – Sky Sports

Ayoze Perez will be unveiled as a Leicester City player today.

Thursday morning has seen Sky Sports put it up as a ‘breaking news’ story.

The Spanish striker having passed his medical and the broadcaster saying they have been told the £30m transfer will be formally announced later today.

Fair to say there have been a lot of split opinions on Ayoze Perez since he arrived at St James Park back in 2014.

Signed from Tenerife in the second tier, some Newcastle fans at the time were so underwhelmed by the signing he was even referred to as the ‘Spanish Waiter’ by a minority, such were the low/nil expectations.

He will go down in the record books as having been Newcastle’s top scorer in each of these past two seasons, yet fans are still split to a large extent.

Not so much thinking of him as the ‘Spanish Waiter’ but somebody who continues to blow hot and cold. Scoring nine goals in the final 11 weeks of the 2018/19 Premier League season but only three in the first six months of the campaign.

The reality though is that between Perez and Rondon, they scored 23 of Newcastle’s 42 PL goals last season…

An even bigger reality check is seeing the media put out photos of management and players arriving at the training ground to begin pre-season. No Rafa, Rondon and Perez, but photos of Neil Redfearn, Colback, Lazaar, Murphy and Muto.

Next season at Leicester, we will now get a much better idea of whether Ayoze Perez is a part-timer or a £30m striker.

The Mag – 3 July 2019:

Journalist and Leicester City fan, Geoff Peters, last night broke the story that Ayoze Perez and his agent had spent the day in talks at the King Power Stadium, ahead of a move to the Foxes.

Sky Sports then later revealed that a transfer fee had been agreed, with Leicester set to pay £30m for the striker who has been Newcastle’s top scorer these past two seasons.

Now news comes from Leicester that the player is having his medical today.

The Leicester Mercury reporting that Ayoze Perez is now in the East Midlands to complete his medical and has already agreed personal terms.

They state that Leicester City met a £30m release clause in the striker’s contract and he will now become the club’s record signing, beating the £29m paid for Islam Slimani, another player who has ‘played’ for both clubs.

The local paper saying that they understand that unless there are any stumbling blocks with the medical, the transfer should be announced by Thursday at the latest.

He is in Leicester this afternoon to complete his medical and with no complications expected, the deal should be completed within the next 24 hours.

The Leicester Mercury add that Brendan Rodgers said before the end of the season, he was looking for a player who could play wide as well as coming inside, somebody who could offer depth in the striker and attacking midfield positions. Ayoze Perez fitting the bill.

Imagine that, a manager deciding who he wants to buy and then the club backing that judgement and going out and paying a Premier League market rate for him….

How bizarre, at least we can be sure that so long as Mike Ashley is in charge we won’t be having any of that nonsense, a manager with total freedom to decide who he needs and getting them.

The Mag – Tuesday 2 July 2019:

Earlier tonight Leicester fan and journalist Geoff Peters broke the news (see below) that Ayoze Perez had been at the King Power stadium today.

The Talksport journalist saying that the Newcastle striker was set to sign for the Foxes with a transfer fee understood to have been agreed.

Now, Sky Sports have breaking news that a transfer fee has been agreed, with Leicester set to pay £30m for the player.

This would represent a profit of over £28m for a player who cost less than £2m five years ago.

Sky Sports say that personal terms are still being discussed and Perez is yet to take his medical.

Leicester have shown time and time again that they are prepared to try and compete on signings and whilst they sell players at times for big money, they reinvest it.

Man Utd have offered £70m for Harry Maguire and so Leicester will have no trouble paying the £30m for Ayoze Perez.

Newcastle fans left wondering  what will next hit them, as the bad news just keeps on coming from Mike Ashley.

The Mag – Earlier tonight (Tuesday 2 July 2019):

Ayoze Perez has repeatedly hinted that he could leave Newcastle United and set to turn 26 later this month, it appears now it could soon be reality.

Three weeks he gave yet another interview (see below) and said that he didn’t know what would happen this summer.

Having previously talked a lot about wanting Newcastle to show more ambition, the departure of Rafa Benitez could well have been the final push for him.

Tuesday night has brought reports that Ayoze Perez and his agent have been at Leicester City today and it is claimed a transfer fee could already have even been agreed between the two clubs

Geoff Peters is a journalist and presenter for Talksport and says a medical could take place this week.

As it happens, he is also a Leicester fan, so I think his local knowledge and contacts would tend to make this pretty believable.

Ayoye Perez has scored the winner these past two seasons away at Leicester and sadly the fact is, that as things stand, if you were ambitious then it would be Foxes over Magpies every time.

Leicester are set to bank £70m+ from Man Utd for harry Maguire so they would have no problem putting up whatever money Mike Ashley would demand.

Last season couldn’t have summed it up Perez’ time at NUFC better, only two goals scored in Newcastle’s first 22 Premier League games, then 10 goals in the final 16.

Overall his Premier League seasons have ended up:

2018/19 – 12 Premier League goals and 2 assists

2017/18 – 8 Premier League goals and 5 assists

2015/16 – 6 Premier League goals and 2 assists

2014/15 – 7 Premier League goals and 0 assists

In total, Ayoze Perez has scored 33 goals in 143 PL appearances and got 10 assists in his four Premier League seasons.

Ayoze Perez – 13 June 2019:

“It is something that I cannot say right now.

“You cannot guarantee it, we will see.

“It’s going to be a long summer and obviously, there’s going to be a day where you make a decision.

“It depends on many things – let’s see what happens.

“Obviously, this place is always going to be in my heart, whatever happens. We’ll see what happens.

“It’s going to be a long summer, whatever can happen. I cannot guarantee anything, but we’ll see.

“But what I know is that I cannot thank enough Newcastle – the city, the club, everything around – for what they have given me.

“I came to a different world and I cannot thank Newcastle enough for what they gave me.

“It’s been five unbelievable years, ups and downs, unforgettable moments, bad moments, but it’s part of the process that made me a better footballer and person.

“Obviously, it’s always going to be in my heart, whatever happens. This place, this city, this club – everything is going to be in my heart forever.

“I’ve been here five years, which is a long time. Also the challenge that not many Spanish players have had success in this club.

“So all those challenges, I took them, and I think it’s been an amazing five years for myself, and I could grow up as a professional in this club.”
