Aston Villa fans comments on Steve Bruce taking over at Newcastle United – Loving it!

Aston Villa fans have been taking a lot of interest in Steve Bruce getting the Newcastle United job.

Fair to say that most of them are amazed that he has been appointed, considering is record in recent times.

That includes just under two years at Villa Park, eventually chased out on 3 October 2018 as he threatened to take them into League One.

A run of only one win in 10 Championship games seeing Aston Villa fans well and truly turn on him and indeed one supporter famously summed up their feelings, hurling a cabbage at Steve Bruce on the touchline.

A lot of amazement at how Mike Ashley has chased out Rafa Benitez and then replaced him with Bruce.

The overwhelming message as well is that Villa fans are absolutely loving this new job for Steve Bruce and really enjoying the thought of how he will play a role in a disaster of a season.

One or two dissenting voices but drowned out by the majority verdict.

Whilst Newcastle have signed nobody after 67 days of the transfer window and have made a net profit on sales of around £33m, Villa have signed eight players and have a net spend of over £90m.

Aston Villa fans commenting via their Villa Talk message board:

‘Steve Bruce is about to make a laughing stock of Newcastle Utd. Let’s enjoy it and breathe a sigh of relief he has been here and gone.’

‘What do you mean make them a laughing stock, that would imply that they weren’t already which isn’t true as they have always been a laughing stock.’

‘I know we had owners who were bad for us but I haven’t seen anything like this clown Mike Ashley.

Every time they recover and come good, he wrecks it.

We had bad decisions which cost us our PL status but for Newcastle it seems that Ashley is revenging himself on the club. Although this is the first time to begin the circus during the summer. Usually it’s during season.’

‘Bruce is a championship manager and we appointed him when we were a championship team unlike Newcastle.’

‘If the media ever knew they were one of the most hated clubs in the UK they would be heartbroken.

Scummy club and they are getting what they richly deserve, they deserve Ashley and allotment man.’

‘For all the news this is getting…can you imagine if Bruce had relegated sunderland last season and was now getting this job?’

‘I wonder if the 90m transfer budget figure that’s being quoted includes the value of the contracted salary/bonuses. That would make more sense from Ashley and makes that number an awful lot smaller.’

‘You can have £200M but who of class will want to go there now, toxic atmosphere from day one hopefully.’

‘Rumours saying he’s got £90 mill to spend.

I mean, he’s got 3 weeks of the window left, done zero preparation for any signing, so will be buying the one’s nobody wants and for top dollar, probably with crippling wages.

This is the moment Newcastle could completely screw themselves for years.’

‘That simply cannot be true. Rafa left because he had no transfer budget.

Ashley may be a d.ck, but he is not an idiot.

If he was willing to spend £90m then Rafa would have been the man to get him a top 10 finish with that. Not “11th choice” Bruce.

Bruce spending £90m would be a disaster but I cannot see any way they would spend £90m. I would love to be wrong on this as the results would be comical.’

‘I think he’ll do alright at Newcastle. It wont be good enough for their fans of course, but I think he will keep them out of the relegation battle. He does the basics well enough and will have them organised.’

‘No doubting Rafa is a far better manager than Bruce, but I think SB will have Newcastle in a similar league position. They wont score that many, but they wont concede that many either. Maybe the fans will hound him out by Christmas. Time will tell.’

‘I can’t wait to see him in action in the transfer market for them.’

‘Bruce finished 10th with Sunderland and we all know that was his biggest accomplishment in football.

The guy never shuts up about it.’

‘You would be pretty miffed watching Rafa ride off into the sunset and then see the journeyman and his half baked posse – ride into toon as replacements.’

‘Toon fans hailing Benitez as some great footballing messiah but they won 12 games in each of the 2 seasons they have been back finishing on 44 & 45 points.

They have only scored 81 goals in the 76 games played & Only the bottom 4 teams scored fewer goals than them last season so it’s not like they have been playing especially attacking football anyway.

They will just be in for a similar season presuming that they actually replace Perez with someone who can put the ball in the net.’

‘The reaction to his appointment…jeeeeeeeez, it’s literally worse than it was on here after two years. It’s like they’ve been stuck with him for a decade of mediocrity. Makes his strongest detractors on here appear like Ned Flanders in comparison.’

‘Yes, he’s got those 4 promotions to his name which blows Rafa’s stats out the water.’

‘Steve Bruce is doomed to fail.

This has similarities to when we got McLeish. Fans are not happy, he’s managed Sunderland, toxic atmosphere from day 1.’

‘Similarities, but I dont think McLeish was as instantly hated.

There was a lot of negativity, but a reasonably large proportion of the fanbase were willing to give him a chance.

If you look at the Newcastle fans it is universally negative.

I have never seen a reaction like it.’

‘We’ll see what it’s like at the Sports Direct Arena.

The general vibe when we appointed McLeish was very negative, but the away support at Fulham and his first home game showed something completely different, the fans were very behind him.

Let’s see if they get behind him, or just drown the club in their toxicity.’

‘One thing is for sure, he is going to get one hell of a short honeymoon period!’

‘Think I read that he wasn’t to be directly involved in transfers there.

Just a head coach.

Sadly…’

‘Potato Head Coach.’

Ashley gave £70m to McClaren the year they got relegated, that season only Man City spent more.’

‘Yes they went down with two players in their midfield who started this year’s CL final!

Would argue Mitrovic upfront for them that year was on a par with Rondon last season.

Just shows inept manager can relegate a decent squad.

Newcastle fans would also be frustrated Benitez never got 70m to play with in one transfer window in premier league.’
