Salomon Rondon now wanted by Andre Villas-Boas for reunion at Marseille – La Provence
Salomon Rondon is now a target for Marseille according to reports on Monday morning.
The La Provence report says that Andre Villas-Boas wants to take the Venezuelan striker to Ligue 1.
The former Chelsea and Tottenham manager was only appointed 20 days ago and is now looking to rebuild.
The new Marseille boss tasked with at least getting the club back into the Champions League after only finishing fifth this past season.
The Marseile based newspaper reports that their information is that Villas-Boas sees Salomon Rondon as the ideal main striker to come in and replace Mario Balotelli, who is now leaving the French club as his contract ends this month.
Together, Andre Villas-Boas and Salomon Rondon won the Russian League title and Russian Supercup, when they were together at Zenit St Petersburg.
Rondon only leaving in 2015 due to his desire to play in the Premier Legaue, West Brom paying £16m to take the striker to England after he had scored 25 goals in 37 league games for Zenit, as well as seven goals in 18 appearances in the Champions League and Europa League.
Rafa Benitez wanted to buy Salomon Rondon in summer 2018 but Mike Ashley blocked the move due to the striker being 28 years old, Rafa having to instead a late loan deal which included having to let Dwight Gayle be loaned in the opposite direction.
Rondon going on to be player of the season but Newcastle fans left frustrated as Mike Ashley has once again refused to let the striker’s £16.5m release clause to be met so far.
With takeover talk in the air and no conclusion to the Rafa Benitez contract issue, it remains to be seen whether Newcastle will even try to buy Salomon Rondon. Seemingly, only new owners coming in would make that a possibility.
Rondon is currently at the Copa America tournament and started off with a goallesss draw against Peru on Saturday, two more group games coming up within the next week.
There are wider concerns for fans that this summer/transfer window could quickly pass by with targets missed out on, already Aston Villa have paid £22m for Wesley Moraes, a striker who Newcastle had been constantly linked with.
