Ronaldo gets the better of Fabian Schar, eventually
It is Ronaldo who will (correctly) take all the headlines.
However, Fabian Schar and his international teammates put in an excellent performance.
Playing on home soil in this Nations League semi-final, Portugal took the lead in the 25th minute.
Former Newcastle defender Kevin Mbabu gave away the free-kick and Ronaldo superbly put it over the wall and into the bottom corner.
Switzerland were right back at them though and for much of the game the better team
The match looked have turned in the 53rd minute, when Portugal won a penalty, only for VAR to intervene.
Newcastle’s Fabian Schar getting a reprieve after giving a clear penalty, only for VAR to help flag up an incident seconds earlier at the other end.
The referee instead awarding Switzerland a penalty and Rodriguez converting to level at 1-1 on 57 minutes.
Going into this match, Cristiano Ronaldo has not scored since finding the net against Morocco at the 2018 World Cup almost a year ago, the Portuguese star following up his hat-trick against Spain five days earlier in Russia.
Ronaldo had attempted 27 shots without scoring for his country since 20 June 2018 but that wasn’t an issue tonight.
Despite it being an end to end game there ended up being only three shots on target at either end of the pitch and Ronaldo scored all three of the Portugal ones. The Juventus star adding two more excellent finishes in the 88th and 90th minutes.
Tough for Fabian Schar and the rest of the Swiss team to take but now they move on to Sunday where they will face the losing team of England v Holland which is played on Thursday night.
Portugal playing the winners of that game later on Sunday, to see who is crowned Nations League champions.
