Report claims Dwight Gayle has made decision on his future
Dwight Gayle is at a crossroads.
The striker has two years left on his Newcastle contract and set to turn 29 in October, has a big decision to make.
On the face of it there appears to be two, probably three choices.
Stay and fight for his place at Newcastle United, join an ambitious Championship club and aim for promotion, or maybe look at another Premier League club to give him a chance in the top tier – possibly one of the three promoted ones.
Stoke City have been repeatedly linked with Dwight Gayle and there would be any number of other Championship clubs desperate to sign him as well.
Easy to see why, as in the second tier he is a goalscoring machine.
Taking his Championship season with Newcastle (2016/17) and last season (2018/19) on loan at West Brom, Gayle started 60 Championship matches (plus 14 sub appearances) and scored an astonishing 47 goals. Last season, Stoke finished a dismal 16th and only the detached bottom two scored less than the Potters’ 45 goals in 46 games. No surprise they would love to sign the Newcastle striker.
Norwich City have already been linked with a move for Dwight Gayle as their big signing after promotion but no public sign of a bid yet.
On Saturday morning a report from The Star says that Gayle has actually decided to stay and fight for his place at Newcastle.
The report is totally missing any detail (see below) as to how they know he is going to stay at St James Park and indeed you have to doubt whether anybody currently at Newcastle United is absolutely sure of where they will be next season.
Pre-season starts in only 12 days time and until the ownership and manager’s position are sorted, difficult to see anything significant happening in the transfer market, in or out.
If it all falls right with Rafa staying and new ambitious owners, I assume most fans would hope that sights would be set on strikers at a (perceived) higher level than Dwight Gayle.
However, as things stand, seven weeks before the new season, Joselu is set to leave and Rondon is a West Brom player, meaning Gayle is currently Newcastle’s only out and out striker.
One thing I guess we can be sure about, is that if Dwight Gayle does leave this summer, it will be on a permanent move and not a loan one.
His transfer value will never be higher than it is at the moment and allowing him to go out on loan would make zero sense, especially when it is a striker who relies a lot on pace and who would be just short of his 30th birthday next summer if returning from another year on loan.
The Star report:
Newcastle striker Dwight Gayle makes decision on future amid Stoke interest
Ambitious Championship outfit Stoke are weighing up a bid for the 29-year-old, who is valued at around £20m by the Magpies.
But Gayle has not given up on his Toon career.
Benitez’ own position is shrouded in doubt but Gayle believes that even if the Spaniard stays, he can still have a future on Tyneside.
Gayle is due to report back for pre-season training on July 4 – three days after Benitez’ contract expires.
