Rafa Benitez consults friend about Celtic ‘Still in dark about future at Newcastle and any takeover bid’
Rafa Benitez has been talking to plenty of media this past week.
Newcastle United’s manager in high demand in Madrid, as Liverpool were set to take on Tottenham.
When journalists strayed from Liverpool/Champions League talk, Rafa repeatedly said no comment when asked about his situation at Newcastle United.
Peter Smith is Scotland correspondent with ITV News and via his twitter account he says he has had an ‘interesting chat’ with Rafa Benitez.
No indication as to whether or not there will be a recorded interview of their chat going out on air.
However, the ITV News man did say about Rafa Benitez: ‘He’s still in the dark about his future at Newcastle and any takeover bid.’
Newcastle fans had/have hoped that media claims of the manager knowing nothing about the claimed takeover or the position on his new contract, was wide of the mark.
However, we are now only four weeks until the end of Rafa’s current three year contract and less than five weeks away from pre-season training starting, so clarity is desperately needed ASAP, so Rafa Benitez can get cracking on the transfer window and other pre-season preparations.
Not surprisingly, with him working for ITV up in Scotland, Peter Smith asked Rafa Benitez about the rumours of him possibly going to Celtic, which came to an end when Neil Lennon was confirmed this week.
The journalist says Rafa Benitez ‘told me he consulted his friend Frank McParland (ex-Rangers scout) about the prospect of the Celtic job. He decided against for now, but would consider it in future.’
Frank McParland worked as Chief Scout and then Academy Director for Rafa Benitez at Liverpool, losing his job eventually when working under Brendan Rodgers, moving on to work at Rangers.
Interesting that Rafa offered that piece of information but surely he was just being polite when saying he might consider Celtic in the future.
More importantly for Newcastle United is the very near future for Rafa Benitez.
This uncertainty hanging over so many things at Newcastle United needs to break.
An announcement that Rafa Benitez has extended his contract and after getting suitable assurances, is happy to stay on regardless of who owns the club in August, would tick a lot of boxes in reassuring Newcastle fans that this summer won’t end up being a shambles.
Peter Smith from ITV News:
“Interesting chat with Rafa Benitez.
“He’s still in the dark about his future at Newcastle and any takeover bid.
“Also told me he consulted his friend Frank McParland (ex-Rangers scout) about the prospect of the Celtic job.
“He decided against for now, but would consider it in future.
“He told me there were no talks held with Celtic, but he was very aware of being linked with the job.
“He said there were no talks, he was just aware of being linked with the job and spoke to his friend to find out more.
“Decided it wasn’t for him at this stage but spoke highly of Celtic – he said he remembers taking Valencia to Celtic Park.”
