Newcastle United Takeover Cluedo – Rafa Benitez at the training ground the latest ‘clue’

The Newcastle United Takeover, is it happening?

Each day that goes by is another day of torture.

This summer would no doubt have felt very frustrating for Newcastle fans if we had got to this point with no signings and no new Rafa Benitez contract agreed.

However, to have the raised hope of Mike Ashley at last going, it has taken frustrations to a whole new level.

I know it is a bit old school in these days of everything happening on a screen…but I was always a massive fan of the Cluedo board game.

With everybody analysing everything, no matter how inconsequential, to the nth degree. I thought it would be worth accumulating the key clues…

Thursday 16 May

Rafa Benitez meets Mike Ashley and Lee Charnley at a secret location in London.

Sunday 26 May

The Sun ‘exclusive’ states that ‘Mike Ashley has agreed to sell Newcastle for £350million to the cousin of Manchester City’s Arab owner Sheikh Mansour.’

Sunday 26 May

Chronicle say Newcastle United have issued a ‘No Comment’ response when asked about Newcastle United Takeover.

Monday 27 May

Midhat Kidwai, MD of Bin Zayed Group releases statement which included: ‘We can confirm the representatives of his Highness Sheikh Khaled Bin Zayed Al Nahyan are in discussions with Mike Ashley and his team about the proposed acquisition of Newcastle United Football Club. We have agreed terms and are working hard to complete the transaction at the earliest opportunity.’

Wednesday 29 May

Midhat Kidwai, MD of Bin Zayed Group releases statement which included: ‘The proof of funds statement was forwarded to Mike Ashley’s lawyers on 17 April 2019.’

Thursday 30 May

The Telegraph say the Premier League ‘would not provide a “running commentary on a takeover that may or may not happen.” Adding that it was up to Newcastle to either confirm or deny whether the club was going to be sold.’

Thursday 30 May

The Chronicle say they have contacted Newcastle United three times in past 24 hours and each time the club have issued a ‘No Comment’ response when asked about Newcastle United Takeover.

Sunday 2 June

Peter Smith from ITV News talks to the NUFC boss in Madrid: ‘Interesting chat with Rafa Benitez. He’s still in the dark about his future at Newcastle and any takeover bid.’

Monday 3 June

The journalist (Justin Allen) who originally broke the Newcastle United takeover story eight days earlier speaks out social media when challenged about whether his exclusive stands up:

“Mike Ashley has agreed to sell the club for.£350m to the Bin Zayed Group. FACT.

“Contracts have been signed. FACT.

“That paperwork is with the Premier League. FACT.”

Wednesday 5 June

Sheikh Khaled registers new company at Companies House, Monochrome Acquisition Limited, could it be a financial vehicle to be used to complete a Newcastle United takeover?

Wednesday 5 June

The Express say Newcastle United have issued a ‘No Comment’ response when asked about Newcastle United Takeover.

Sunday 9 June

A Chronicle ‘exclusive’ says  the Bin Zayed Group have given them two word statement, telling them ‘all good’ when asked about the takeover.

Monday 10 June

The Northern Echo say Newcastle United are still continuing to ‘No Comment’ when asked about the takeover.

Monday 10 June

Rafa Benitez filmed by Sky Sports at NUFC training ground where he stays for two hours.

I think the easiest clue to deal with is the last one.

I don’t see what Rafa Benitez turning up at the training ground, where he WORKS, tells us about anything. Whether it is a new contract or indeed a Newcastle United Takeover.

Any movement on either won’t depend on dodgy Sky Sports footage taken outside the training ground from the bushes.

More importantly what we do have…

A journalist breaking  a story that is then subsequently backed up a number of times by the alleged buyer.

Two official statements by the Bin Zayed Group saying the deal is progressing.

The Bin Zayed Group registering a new company at Companies House that could well be used as a vehicle to buy the club.

The Premier League effectively giving a ‘no comment’ when asked about what is happening.

Rafa Benitez saying he knows nothing about a Newcastle United Takeover but he would say that regardless of whether he knew anything or not.

Maybe the two biggest clues for me are what is NOT happening.

As per above, at least six times and counting Newcastle United (which in reality equals Mike Ashley) have said ‘no comment’, in the past they have usually been quick to rubbish similar claims.

Then you have Rafa Benitez, patiently saying nothing when if there was Newcastle United Takeover likely to happen, would surely by now have been kicking off in the media big time, either with direct quotes or via ‘sources’ close to Rafa.

So summing up our Newcastle United Takeover Cluedo, we are sure of a number of things.

Mike Ashley is guilty as charged by the fanbase.

The 12 years of crime have happened inside St James Park.

The weapon used has been Newcastle United.

It is now time to start kick off a whole new game with a completely different set of characters at the top.
