Newcastle United ‘chasing’ these £30m signings but only one problem…
Newcastle United have been linked with a lot of players this summer.
Not a day goes by when the Magpies are not linked with a new potential signing.
The less (nobody!) players that Newcastle buy, the more that we are linked with.
Not only that but the value of the potential signings NUFC are ‘chasing’ is increasing as well.
It has gone £20m, £25m and now £30m+ players we are regularly linked with.
It’s great, really great, exciting, but only one problem.
None of it is true, Newcastle are not actively ‘chasing’ any of these players.
There is absolutely no chance of Newcastle United signing anybody for the foreseeable future.
We are now on the 36th day of the 2019 summer transfer window, with 49 days left to go.
I think we can safely say now, that this month there will be no new owners, no new Rafa Benitez contract agreed and not a single player signed.
So I reckon on 1 July 2019, we will be sitting here on the 47th day of the transfer window with only 38 left to go, with no manager under contract and not a clue as to who will own the club when the new season kicks off.
Having said that, I think we can all have a canny good guess now that this will still be Mike Ashley, judging by his PR strategy cranking up, getting Dennis Wise on live TV yesterday thanks to his mates at Sky Sports, as well as bits and pieces starting to appear in newspapers that are sympathetic to the person who has been a disaster for Newcastle fans these past 12 years.
This is all building up into what looks like an absolutely chaotic pre-season, whatever happens from this point on.
A fortnight until pre-season starts and a week after that they fly off to China.
Even if new ambitious owners were announced today AND Rafa Benitez signed a new long-term contract, these next seven weeks would still be difficult.
The reality is though that this isn’t going to happen, even if new owners and Rafa are going to be here next season, we will be looking to sometime in July by the time that will feasibly happen.
I still hold out hope but my realistic head tells me that after these past 12 years, there is more chance of Mike Ashley still being here and it being a £30m maximum budget for new signings this summer for new players, not chasing any number of new signings costing £30m each.
Just look back at when Newcastle eventually paid £21m for Miguel Almiron in January, the way Mike Ashley had the club going on, you would think it was 1996 all over again and NUFC signing Alan Shearer for a world record transfer fee.
The reality is that since then we have seen Aston Villa, Everton, Wolves and West Ham all sign at least one player each for more than that new Newcastle record fee, whilst others such as Bournemouth, Fulham and Palace have all paid out more than that (£21m) previously.
To have any chance of competing with even those clubs (Bournemouth, Wolves, West Ham, Palace, Aston Villa, Everton), we have to have to have all of our ducks in a row first.
Rafa Benitez continuing if Mike Ashley stays as owner won’t end well, nothing good will come whilst he is still around.
Only once new owners and Rafa Benitez are working in tandem, I’ll start taking notice of chasing £15m+ signings, never mind those valued at twice as much.
