Newcastle United back in for Rennes attacking player 2 years after offering £10m – L’Equipe
It was just over two years ago when it was reported that Newcastle United had made an offer for Ismaila Sarr.
It was 1 June 2017 when France Football claimed (see below) that Newcastle had offered 12m euros (approximately £10.5m at the time) for the versatile forward/winger, who had only recently turned 19.
Their story going on to say back then that Metz had knocked back Newcastle’s offer as they wanted at least 15m euros. The story was backed up to an extent when sure enough, a month later (July 2017) Rennes paid 16m euros for the Senegal international.
Today (Tuesday 18 June), L’Equipe are reporting that Newcastle United are once again showing interest in buying Ismaila Sarr.
These past two seasons have seen the player progress rapidly and with 12 goals and eight assists last season in 41 Ligue 1 and Europa League starts (plus three sub appearances) for Rennes, he has become a much sought after player.
Still only 21 and no surprise his value has increased, with L’Equipe claiming/reporting that Watford have had a 30m euros (approx £27m) offer turned down by Rennes.
The newspaper saying that Newcastle United are now expected to come in and bid more than Watford’s offer.
I think this is where we are left shaking our heads….
If a takeover did go through at Newcastle United, then bidding up to £30m for certain targets wouldn’t be seen as surprising, considering the likes of Everton, Leicester, Wolves and West Ham have paid £30m for a signing in the past, whilst others such as Bournemouth (£25m for Lerma) and Palace (£27m for Benteke) will do the same no doubt in the near future.
Especially considering Newcastle have sold players such as Carroll (£35m), Sissoo (£30m) and Wijnaldum (£25m) for these figures eight and three years ago.
Ambitious new owners would surely unlock the door to going for ambitious targets but difficult to see any signings being made until the ownership issue is sorted.
If that all falls away to nothing and we are left with Mike Ashley still in control, it will be ‘interesting’ to see what happens then with signings in this transfer window.
The Mag – 1 June 2017:
‘The transfer stories are coming thick and fast on Thursday, with claims now that Newcastle United have made an offer for Ismaila Sarr.
The winger has made a big impression in his first season of European football, joining Metz last summer from domestic football in Senegal.
Only turning 19 this February, as an 18 year old Ismaila Sarr went straight into first team action at the start of last (2016/17) season, ending up making 31 Ligue 1 appearances – 20 places in the starting eleven and 11 off the bench.
His impact could have been even more in his first Ligue 1 season if he hadn’t been called up for the African Cup of Nations, making three appearances in the finals in January/February despite still being only 18 years old at the time.
On the other side of the Channel, France Football claim that their information is that Newcastle have offered 12m euros (approx £10.5m) plus future payments based on hitting certain targets.
However, they also say that Metz look to be holding out for more and haven’t accepted the Newcastle offer, wanting at least 15m euros (around £13m) for their star asset.’
