Ian Wright slaughters Mike Ashley on Rafa Benitez leaving Newcastle United – A must read

Ian Wright is now one of the most clued up pundits on the goings on at Newcastle United.

Once an irritant, his best mate Alan Shearer has educated the former Arsenal player on exactly what it is all about at St James Park.

The end result is that it is great at times like this with Rafa Benitez leaving, when you get a neutral who really knows his stuff and is keen to put it out there.

Ian Wright on hearing the news says: ‘Devastating for Newcastle fans and I’m absolutely gutted for them.’

As for Mike Ashley’s forcing the respected manager out of St James Park: ‘It is really bad. It is disgraceful.’

As for the owner’s motivations when it comes to Rafa’s position and the supporters giving hope that he is genuinely going to sell the club this time, Ian Wright declares: ‘I always believe Mike Ashley does that simply to get them (the fans) riled up.’

Ian Wright talking to BBC Radio 5 Live:

“Devastating  news.

“Devastating for Newcastle fans and I’m absolutely gutted for them.

“But I don’t think we could be too surprised, with the way Rafa has had to fight tooth and nail (for anything he has got out of Mike Ashley these past three years).

“The calibre of manager that he is, to try and get an owner to back him to try and take Newcastle to a place in the Premier League where they may be going for the Europa League, they may be going for FA Cups, get the squad right – because they had a manager of pedigree.

“Now that he has gone, I do feel very disappointed for them (Newcastle fans).

“People talking about his head has been turned (by a job elsewhere)…his head could have been turned when they got relegated! He stayed though.

“They were offering him a one year extension on the same money but no investment in the infrastructure, or what he is trying to do.

“It is really bad.

“It is disgraceful.

“Rafa being there was a big surprise to everybody but he never ever felt like that.

“He went to that club to try and take them somewhere…without the backing that he needed.

“Now he is finally at the end of his tether.

“Whether his head has been turned or not, it could have been turned ages ago.

“He stayed for those fans and those are the ones I feel sorry for.

“Are they going to be sold, is it going to be new ownership?

“I always believe Mike Ashley does that simply to get them (the fans) riled up.

“They ave another £120m in the coffers and Rafa is getting no money towards the infrastructure.

“With all due respect and I don’t mean this badly towards Newcastle fans.

“You know what, he has to leave.

“It is principles now, principles.”
