Gary Lineker and Mick Quinn lead stunned reaction to Mike Ashley forcing Rafa Benitez out of Newcastle
Gary Lineker calls it ‘awful news for the club and their fans’ as Mike Ashley has today forced Rafa Benitez out of Newcastle United.
Top football writer and another non-Newcastle fan Henry Winter of The Times declaring: ‘Mike Ashley lets Newcastle fans down again. Club need Ashley leaving, not Benitez.’
If ever there was a clear divide between light and darkness, this is it.
Even those who you might expect to be taking the middle line….Keith Downie of Sky Sports: ‘Sadly the Spaniard has proved to be too big a manager for NUFC under its current guise.’
George Caulkin of The Times on the money as usual, perfectly summing up the issues: ‘The sad thing is that he (Rafa) recognised things in the club which this regime simply won’t; potential, ambition, possibility.’
Former player and now fan Mick Quinn: ‘Rafa is a World Class Manager, he loved his time at the club and its another sad and embarrassing day for this big club.’
Mike Ashley has really done it this time.
Can’t wait to hear what his lame stooges come out with in response.
“Rafa Benitez is to leave Newcastle United.
“Awful news for the club and their fans.”
Henry Winter – Chief Football Writer from The Times:
“Hugely damaging loss to Newcastle United.
“Rafa Benitez over-achieved with such limited resources.
“Mike Ashley lets Newcastle fans down again.
“Club need Ashley leaving, not Benitez.”
Keith Downie of Sky Sports:
“Honestly thought the two would somehow find a resolution, so I’m shocked this has come today.
“Forget takeovers, keeping Rafa Benitez was the most important thing for NUFC and they’ve failed.
“Sadly the Spaniard has proved to be too big a manager for NUFC under its current guise.”
George Caulkin of The Times:
“Benitez has been brilliant for Newcastle.
“He gave supporters hope and pride at a moment when they had none & they responded in kind.
“The sad thing is that he recognised things in the club which this regime simply won’t; potential, ambition, possibility.”
“Well I feared the worst and its happening, Rafa leaving NUFC.
“They offered him a one year contract and no assurances.
“Rafa is a World Class Manager, he loved his time at the club and its another sad and embarrassing day for this big club.”
That official Newcastle United Statement:
‘It is with disappointment that we announce manager Rafael Benítez will leave Newcastle United upon the expiry of his contract on 30th June 2019.
We have worked hard to extend Rafa’s contract over a significant period of time, however it has not been – and will not be – possible to reach an agreement with Rafa and his representatives.
Rafa’s coaching staff, Paco de Míguel Moreno, Antonio Gómez Pérez and Mikel Antia, will also leave the club on 30th June.
We would like to thank Rafa and his coaching team for their efforts over the last three years and their significant contribution to what has been collectively achieved.
