Exactly 50 years ago today Newcastle United lift the Fairs Cup – Video

Our last trophy was won in black and white, unless you were one of the lucky ones to make it over to Budapest for the Fairs Cup finale the best you would have seen would have been the highlights that we bring you here.

The first season Newcastle United competed in Europe and they bring back the Cup, you couldn’t make it up.

In the first leg at St James Park, three second half goals from Jimmy Scott and Bobby Moncur (2) looked to have made the return leg in Hungary pretty much a formality.

In this second leg match of course, exactly 50 years ago today, Newcastle were battered in the first forty five minutes and went in two down, only three-two up on aggregate.

There then followed the great story of Joe Harvey calmly walking into a dispirited dressing room and asking what was wrong.

When the players pointed out that United were being taken apart, Joe coolly replied that they just needed to get one and the Hungarians would fall apart (or words to that effect!).

They went out for that second half and Bobby Moncur quickly got his third goal of the two-legged final, the only three goals he would score for Newcastle.

The rest as they say is history, further goals from Arentoft and Foggon capping a magnificent fightback and 6-2 aggregate win.

A great day in Newcastle’s history after 14 years without a trophy, making it four pieces of silverware lifted in an 18 year period.

Nobody could have guessed the next 50 years…
