Transfer Rumours

Embarrassing report claims Newcastle United willing to loan winger out and pay most of his wages

Newcastle fans have a lot on their minds at the minute.

Obviously the ownership issue, Rafa’s future and whether any new signings are going to be made, are the three most pressing.

However, despite being some way down the list, the future of Newcastle players who went out on loan last season will also be of interest.

After their loan spells, the likes of Dwight Gayle, Henri Saivet, Rolando Aarons and Achraf Lazaar will all be turning up for pre-season training in 13 days time, unless something happens before 4 July.

An embarrassingly bad transfer story has now appeared though regarding the future of Rolando Aarons.

The winger turns 24 in November and has two years left on his contract, fair to say he has no future at Newcastle United, unless Rafa Benitez leaves of course and then god knows what will happen with anything.

The transfer story comes from SDNA in Greece and they remark on the possibility of Callum Roberts joining Panathinaikos once he becomes out of contract at the end of this month. This story has been going around for the past couple of months and every chance of being true, as he will be looking for a new club and even though there is little money in Greek football, they should be able to offer an acceptable package for the young winger to give it a try.

However, to add to (and embellish?) their story, SDNA claim that Panathinaikos have also asked about loaning Rolando Aarons and Newcastle United have (according to SDNA) agreed to pay most of Aarons’ wages if he is willing to go on loan to Greece.

This story totally ignores the fact that Rolando Aarons went on loan to Sheffield Wednesday earlier this year and got rave reviews, everybody from Steve Bruce (see below) to the Sheff Wed fans praising the player.

Aarons showed some great form and was a key player as the Owls made a late charge for the play-offs which had looked impossible when both the new manager and loan player had arrived in January.

There is no way that Newcastle United would be willing to pay most of his wages so that Panathinaikos can have Rolando Aarons playing for them, pretty much for free. Instead, NUFC will be looking to now sell the winger, or agree to a loan that has an agreement to buy.

As for the player himself, there is no way Aarons will be thinking about dropping down to Greek football, any number of Championship clubs, including Sheffield Wednesday, will be very interested in taking him on to see if he can build on that impressive form at Hillsborough.

Steve Bruce talking about Rolando Aarons when on loan at Sheffield Wednesday earlier this season:

“I think with anybody who has been out for a long time [such as Rolando Aarons] and who has been under the radar for a bit, the main this is A. can you put together a run of games and B. can you stay fit.

“I have seen the advantage of both of those things with Rolando.

“Of course, scoring a goal and playing well gives everybody that bit of confidence and Rolando has given us that something that we didn’t have before in the wide areas.

“He’s got a little trick, he’s quick and he can score a goal.

“He’s improving and that can only go game by game.

“He’s done well the lad, really good lad, wants to do well, wants to enjoy it, plays with a smile on his face. It’s good to see.

“The biggest thing when you haven’t had the best of times, the biggest thing you want to do when you are a footballer is play and certainly we have given him that platform.

“From the very first time he came on he did a trick within a minute if you remember and people took a look and thought aye aye we haven’t seen something like that in a while.”
