West Brom fans angry comments are sparked by two Newcastle United loan players

West Brom fans went through every emotion on Saturday.

Playing the first leg of their play-off semi-final at Aston Villa, Dwight Gayle struck with an excellent finish to give them a precious lead at the break.

Also on loan, Newcastle winger Jacob Murphy was introduced on 66 minutes to try and help see the game out.

However, it was disappointment for the West Brom fans on 75 minutes when Hourihane equalised for Villa, then that became dejection when four minutes later Tammy Abraham gave the home side the lead from the penalty spot.

With two minutes of normal time remaining it was now despair. Dwight Gayle picking up a second yellow card as he went for a crossed ball to try and equalise, colliding with the keeper as he did so.

No more goals but West Brom fans knew star player Gayle would miss the second leg, little did most of them realise at the time, but due to an earlier suspension in the season for diving, the Newcastle striker would also miss the play-off final if the Baggie did get past Villa.

Interesting seeing the comments (see below) from West Brom fans afterwards, the two Newcastle loan players sparking much debate/anger.

Dwight Gayle won goal of the season and player of the season recently after the West Brom fans voted and he is top scorer with 24 goals, as well as eight assists, plus he has won a good number of penalties this season which strike partner Jay Rodriguez has converted.

For many of their fans, missing Dwight Gayle makes them think they have zero chance now in the play-offs. On the sending off, a few seem to think he was at least partly at fault but for most they thought it was totally wrong.

A slight disagreement on that red card for Gayle but seemingly they are totally united on Jacob Murphy.

The West Brom fans seeing him as a total liability, the Newcastle winger making only two starts in the past nine weeks and he’s started only eight games in total and scored two goals.

West Brom caretaker head coach Jimmy Shan:

“It’s very frustrating. Dwight Gayle’s a big player for West Brom. He gets booked for allegedly time wasting at a long throw-in. Then, for the second, he’s got every right to go in and contest the ball.

“There was no malice whatsoever. He’s gone in to make contact, to get on the end of the cross from Jay Rodriguez and make himself a two-goal hero.

“And we should have a penalty ourselves. There was no attempt to win the ball in Abraham’s challenge on Holgate. It was a penalty all day long.

“But we’ve still got 90 minutes ahead of us. The atmosphere will be electric and we’ve got to be bit more on the front foot and take the game to Aston Villa.”

Comments from West Brom fans on their West Brom Index message board:

‘Without Gayle we have no chance.’

‘Dreadful referee. Cheers Jenkins you absolute cu..’

‘Not out of it yet but difficult to see how JRod alone will see us over the line.’

‘Shocking from the ref was never in a million years a yellow for the 2nd what’s he (Gayle) supposed to do?’

‘Gayle outstanding but he’s also cost us. I don’t see us getting through now.’

‘Murphy, what the hell did anyone see in him?’

‘Murphy replacing Philips in midfield is a joke, since then the compactness at the back has gone.’

‘Committed, organised and Gayle is dangerous but lets be honest we’re a bit of a nothing team lacking ideas.’

‘Atrocious refereeing that. Stonewall penalty for us and the most pathetic red card I’ve seen in some time.’

‘Superb goal from Gayle , stupid challenge on the keeper though after already being booked .’

‘If the keeper fumbles it Gayle gets lambasted for not going for it, Disgusting 2nd yellow and had a bad feeling about that ref before the game. And proved my instinct when he should have gave us a pen as well.

They can be got at, But Villa will now set up to counter us which without Gayle can’t see us penetrating.’

‘Please no lightweight Murphy ever again.’

‘Not a foul for me so i don’t blame Gayle, he’s trying to score.’

‘The sub that killed us was Phillips for Murphy, all the problems we had then came down that side as Gibbs was exposed.

Gayle’s first yellow was stupid. Second was never a yellow, he has to go for that ball and he pulled out if the challenge. Again, ref easily persuaded.’

‘We are a one man team and that man is suspended for the return leg.’

‘Yes we’ve not got Gayle but that just means somebody else will have to step up. Liverpool came back without Salah and Firmino, as did Spurs without Kane – footballs a funny old game.’

‘Poor choices bringing on Mears and Murphy.’

‘As soon as Gayle had been booked, there was a nothing incident by the benches involving Gayle which he had a cry over and got the refs attention, from then on it felt like the ref was waiting to send Gayle off, if he cant go in for a challenge like he did with the keeper then football is pretty pointless.’

‘I’ve seen Murphy several times now and I don’t see what he brings to a team, not able to beat a man, average crossing and poor tackling.’
