USMNT confirm that Newcastle United defender misses CONCACAF Gold Cup
News on Monday that the USMNT have named their 40 man provisional squad for the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
After DeAndre Yedlin had an operation on his groin two weeks ago (see below) NUFC said that his ‘recovery will be monitored by Newcastle United and US national team medical staff’, with regard to participation in the tournament.
As it happens, DeAndre Yedlin hasn’t even been named in this provisional 40 player squad.
The tournament takes place from 15 June to 7 July and both Miguel Almiron and Salomon Rondon have been named in their respective countries’ squads.
The US had a training camp starting 27 May with then a friendly against Jamaica on 5 June.
A final 23 man squad to be announced 6 June before a final friendly v Rondon and Venezuela on 9 June, ahead of the tournament kicking off.
For selfish (NUFC) reasons it is a positive that Yedlin will have a more relaxed summer to get properly recovered and fit for the start of next season, without any international distractions.
The Mag – 8 May 2019:
Newcastle United have now officially confirmed that DeAndre Yedlin has had surgery in Philadelphia.
The operation was to repair a groin injury.
The defender had sat out recent games on the bench after Manquillo replaced him in April, following a Yedlin mistake that saw Palace win a penalty and convert it for the three points.
Rafa Benitez said that the player was going to miss the Liverpool game with a groin problem.
No doubt player and club taking the opportunity of the upcoming summer break as a chance for Yedlin to ave the operation and then recover well in time for next season.
The player (see below) posted a photo on Instagram last night, from his hospital bed.
Newcastle United official announcement:
‘Newcastle United defender DeAndre Yedlin has undergone successful surgery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, this week to repair a groin injury.
The 25-year-old, who has made 28 starts and one substitute appearance in the Premier League this term, missed Saturday’s game against Liverpool in order to have the operation.
His recovery will be monitored by Newcastle United and US national team medical staff, with the CONCACAF Gold Cup taking place this summer.’
The Mag – Tuesday 7 May 2019:
DeAndre Yedlin started 28 of the opening 33 Premier League matches of the season.
However, after conceding the penalty that handed a 1-0 win to Crystal Palace, he was replaced by Javier Manquillo.
On the bench against Leicester, Southampton and Brighton, the defender then missed Liverpool altogether.
Rafa Benitez saying he had to be ruled out with a groin injury.
Now the player has given his own update.
DeAndre Yedlin using his Instagram account to reveal that he has now had surgery.
The USMNT international posting a photograph from his hospital bed along with the caption: ‘Surgery complete – now time to recover.’
Yedlin was due to be involved with his country this summer.
They have friendlies against Jamaica and Venezuela in early June, before the CONCACAF Gold Cup kicks off on 15 June.
Group games on 19 June (Guyana), 23 June (Trinidad and Tobago) and 27 June (Panama). With then more games if they progress, culminating with a potential final on 7 July.
Obviously doubtful now if DeAndre Yedlin will have anything more than a long rest this summer.
