Sky Sports name Newcastle signings Rafa Benitez wants to make when/if new contract agreed

Sky Sports have given an update on Newcastle United as we are now four days into the summer transfer window.

Thursday’s opening of the transfer window coincided with Mike Ashley belatedly starting talks with Rafa Benitez.

However, despite guesswork/speculation from elsewhere, George Caulkin of The Times revealed on Saturday that there had been a meeting between Mike Ashley and Rafa Benitez (and Lee Charnley)in London on Thursday afternoon BUT that face to face talks hadn’t continued beyond that.

Caulkin saying though that communication lines had stayed open since then, via phone and email.

Still no definitive answer though as to whether the manager is staying or not.

In the meantime, Sky Sports have reported on the transfer activity Rafa Benitez allegedly wants, if he stays on.

Keith Downie, who covers NUFC for the broadcaster, says his information is that as well as Salomon Rondon, there are at least five other signings Rafa wants to bring in.

The Sky Sports man saying the Spaniard also wants another striker signed, two full-backs, as well as two midfielders.

As Downie points out, much will depend on who leaves or not, as to how many signings would be made. He names ‘Isaac Hayden, Jonjo Shelvey, Matt Ritchie, Mo Diame and Ayoze Perez’ as all potential leavers.

Personally, I think Ritchie will stay and the other four go, whilst I fancy others to move out as well, including Joselu, Ciaran Clark and others. Though hopefully no more first team regulars.

Diame is definitely away, Hayden needs to do so for family reasons, whilst Rafa has made clear Shelvey isn’t going to be a first team regular moving forward. Whilst Sean Longstaff’s emergence has been a massive boost, with only he and Ki Sung-yeung set to still be here, at least two central midfielders will need to come in.

A right-back/wing-back looks essential, whilst Rafa Benitez has been desperate to add another left-back since promotion.

Rondon is an obvious signing and with Joselu not up to it, as well as Perez potentially away as well, the striker situation could be a massive issue this summer. Especially with Muto showing nothing so far to suggest he is good enough.

A lot more questions than answers when it comes to transfers in and out but one thing for sure, Mike Ashley has to convince Rafa Benitez ASAP to stay on, so he can get stuck into the transfer window that is already up and running.

Keith Downie who covers Newcastle United for Sky Sports:

“Newcastle United’s summer shopping list all depends on the future of their manager.

“Rafa Benitez’ contract is up on 30 June and he is yet to agree a new one.

“If…and it looks likely, he does stay. Top of his (Rafa’s) list will be pinning down Rondon on a permanent transfer.

“The Venezuelan has been a revelation on a season long loan from West Brom but Newcastle would have to rip up their policy of only signing players aged 26 or under, for Benítez to get his man.

“In addition to Rondon, Newcastle are in the market for a couple of midfielders, a full-back on either side and another forward to pair with record signing Miguel Almiron.

“Do not be surprised to see Newcastle smash that £21M transfer record again this summer.

“But the number of arrivals will depend on outgoings…

“The futures of Isaac Hayden, Jonjo Shelvey, Matt Ritchie, Mo Diame and Ayoze Perez are uncertain.”
