Rafa Benitez confirms meeting to talk about his future and hopes Mike Ashley will attend – But not sure
Rafa Benitez has met the media on Friday afternoon.
The Newcastle manager talking to journalists ahead of the trip to Fulham.
Rafa saying he has one more injury to deal with.
Ki Sung-yeung will not be involved, along with DeAndre Yedlin, Miguel Almiron, Florian Lejeune and Sean Longstaff.
As for his contract situation, Rafa Benitez said nothing has changed and is still waiting for a meeting.
He hope/expects one will take place within the next 10 days and hopes Mike Ashley will be there, not just Lee Charnley.
Rafa Benitez pre-Fulham press conference – Asked about the contract situation:
“It is exactly the same line…
“We will have a meeting for sure and then let you know when we have any information.
“We just have to concentrate on this (Fulham) game.
“I will be around after Sunday (for contract talks).
“I don’t need too much time on holiday, (just) one week later on is good for me.”
Asked if he is expecting Mike Ashley will be at the meeting to talk about his future:
“Yes but we don’t know yet (for sure).”
“We have more or less the same (injury) problems as before.
“(Though) Ki has a small knee problem, it is not serious but we don’t want to take any risks (so he won’t be involved at Fuam).
“We have one game left to play and we have to try and do well, we want to finish one place higher if we can.
“I have the same feeling for this game) as when we played against Liverpool.
“We are professionals and we will try to do our best, (but) when you have players with little knocks you don’t want to take risks with them.”
Players unsure what’s happening:
“I have some players asking me questions about the future but still we don’t know.
“We have waited 8 months, so we can wait another 10 days.”
On Ayoze Perez transfer speculation alongside better form:
“It was the same last year…
“We don’t know why – maybe because he’s from Tenerife, where it is sunny all the time, and the weather is improving here he is feeling better!
“The people around him have been helping him to play well. It is normal that people will talk about him.
“When you do well, teams around you get interested.”
On Salomon Rondon saying he doesn’t know where he will be next season, or even whether Newcastle will try to sign him:
“I can see what he says and I talk to him every day.
“He has played really well for us and he is key (to this team).
“But obviously we have to decide what happens with me (first).
“He (Rondon) has to wait to see what happens with West Brom, we have to wait for the next 10 days or so before we know.”
Competing in the Premier League?:
“Last year, with 44 points, we finished tenth. This year, tenth place have 50 points already.
“That means this year has been more difficult. Last summer, everybody was spending big money. To be where we are now is a great achievement.”
