Please switch off this transfer discussion at least until Rafa Benitez is a leaver or remainer

There aren’t many positives from this seemingly endless wait on whether Rafa Benitez will still be manager in August.

An endless watch to discover if Mike Ashley really will take his behaviour to a whole new level.

Scoring his biggest ever own goal yet in these 12 years and counting at St James Park.

However, I did think that there would be at least one silver lining from the Rafa Benitez no deal (so far).

Surely transfer discussion/speculation would be minimal, or even pretty much non-existent.

If Newcastle United don’t have a manager in place as yet, then surely everybody knows there is zero chance of any signings being made.

Not that Mike Ashley usually allows anything to happen anyway in the early stages of transfer windows.

Far better to sit back and save on a month or two of wages and then see what dregs are left when we get to the closing stages of a transfer window.

Instead though, the transfer nonsense seems to be even worse than normal.

Newspapers and other media running story after story claiming Newcastle United chasing such and such a player, set to sign whoever, have this one lined up and so on.

Some fantastic(al) tales, considering this is a club that can’t/won’t even reappoint their own manager so far.

Yet we are supposed to believe in imminent deals for £25m, £30m, £40m signings…

All to a backdrop as well of Newcastle (Mike Ashley) not even being wiling to pay £16.5m for the most important player of last season’s team.

Salomon Rondon should have been signed on a permanent deal no matter what the Rafa Benitez situation, a totally different thing to bringing in signings new to the club.

So please, can we tune it down.

Nobody is going to be signed by Newcastle United until Rafa Benitez is sorted out.

Which by the look of how slowly things are moving on that front, it could be well into June before even that is decided, either way…

I have a horrible feeling that when we do get past the manager situation, nothing much will happen this summer on transfers. Especially, if as I fear, Mike Ashley has no intention of trying to tempt Rafa to stay.

In Ashley’s head, I could well see him thinking/believing: ‘We have spent a fortune (£21m on Almiron) in January, this team/squad easily stayed up last season, so why would it need more than a minimum of cash spent this summer?’

Conveniently forgetting of course just how vital Rafa and Rondon were to that ‘success’ in staying up.

Ashley no doubt believing that Dwight Gayle returning from a successful Championship loan will successfully fill Rondon’s boots.

To believe what Mike Ashley is capable of, you only need to look at his past work.

Only allowing squad player Vurnon Anita to be bought after finishing fifth in 2011/12, as well as not buying a single player for 18 months (January 2013 – Summer 2014).

These are two massive examples where the NUFC owner will go to such an extreme, believing no real harm will come about.

It might not bring about immediate disaster but it puts the dodgy foundations in place that more or less guarantee it (disaster) will visit in the not too distant future.

Anyway, please let us all at least rest from transfer speculation for these days/weeks until Rafa is sorted out, then we can start worrying and talking about the players Newcastle United aren’t going to buy…
