Player of the season Fabian Schar says he is loving life at St James Park

Fabian Schar is loving life at Newcastle United.

The Swiss international was relegated when playing for Deportivo last season.

The only silver lining being that he had a relegation release clause meaning Rafa Benitez could land him for only £3m.

The centre-back must have feared the worst though after November arrived and Newcastle still hadn’t won a game.

Consecutive relegations on the cards and Schar had only started one Premier League match.

However, the player says the season has rapidly improved and he can see the team continuing to improve moving into next season.

Fabian Schar has played in 22 Premier League games this season and Newcastle have won eleven and drawn five of them, picking up 38 points. In his absence the team have won none of the 14 games, only picking up four from a possible 42 points.

Maybe Rafa’s best buy so far?

Fabian Schar taking to the Premier League:

“The first weeks and months were really tough when I didn’t play too much, also the team wasn’t getting good results.

“But now I can be really happy with what has happened here.

“I enjoy playing here with all my team-mates, the special stadium, the fans always with us, a really nice year.

“We were last after 10 games with three points…now to already have (over) 40 points is a good thing.

“We improved, worked a lot, that is what you can see over the season.

“It’s hard to break us down and I’m happy to be part of the team.

“Nobody wants to fight with relegation (but) the Premier League is a really tough league, especially when you see how many teams are close to the bottom.

“I think we have quality in the team, and f we continue like we did this season, I’m looking forward to improving (further).

“We will try to get a result (against Liverpool) but we are just looking for our result.

“We want to win all our games and this is our last home game, this is the only thing we’re looking for.

“Clearly it’s going to be a really tough game and we have to be perfect to get something.

“He (Rafa Benitez) is like the players, we will do everything for a good result.”
