Paul Merson not sure what he’d like to happen at St James Park “You hope Liverpool win, you really do”
Paul Merson has been looking ahead to St James Park on Saturday night.
All eyes will be on how well Liverpool can bounce back after the disappointment of Wednesday night.
The scousers bettering Barcelona on pretty much every stat (shots, possession, corners) apart from the most important.
A series of chances wasted as Barcelona took three of theirs.
Paul Merson declaring ahead of Saturday ‘You hope Liverpool win, you really do’…
I’m not sure who ‘you’ exactly is but I know it isn’t me.
Obviously for Paul Merson and his mates at Sky Sports, they will absolutely hate it Newcastle if they ruin the final Sky Sports Super Sunday of the season.
Wins for Newcastle and Man City (against Leicester on Monday) would mean the title heading to the Etihad whatever happens on that final matchday.
With Liverpool winning their last seven Premier League matches and Man City their last twelve, I think there does seem to be an assumption that it will be a case of a perfect finish to the season, 12 points split between the two clubs and Man City winning by that single point advantage which they hold now.
However, I have a feeling that at least one of the four matches will see points dropped.
Paul Merson declares about the home side: ‘Newcastle will make it a long night for them. They are used to being tight, they don’t have to entertain, their fans know what they’re like, they’ll make it hard and it’ll be a tough one.’
It is all a bit lazy, Newcastle have won six of the last seven at home and scored 15 goals, a massive step up on only seven goals in the first 11 games at St James Park.
Liverpool are obviously a very good team and Rafa Benitez doesn’t have the tools to go all out attack, especially with Miguel Almiron missing, but in no way do I think Rafa will be aiming simply for a clean sheet and a goalless draw.
If Newcastle don’t do a decent amount of attacking, it will be more to do with the quality of the opposition.
Paul Merson talking to Sky Sports:
“You hope Liverpool win, you really do.
“Because otherwise you look at it and the fact they lost 3-0 at Barcelona, and if they draw here, their season’s fizzled out in four days.
“I think they will win.
“The other night they just came up against an extraordinary club.
“They don’t deserve their season to fizzle out.
“They should at least take it to the last day.
“Newcastle will make it a long night for them.
“They are used to being tight, they don’t have to entertain, their fans know what they’re like, they’ll make it hard and it’ll be a tough one.
“Prediction is Newcastle 0 Liverpool 2”
