Panathinaikos follow up interest in Newcastle United winger with talks – Report
Reports from Greece on Tuesday that Panathinaikos have followed up their interest in signing Newcastle United winger Callum Roberts.
The NUFC winger turned 22 last month and is expected not to be offered a new contract when Newcastle make public their retained list.
Back in April (see below) Sdna.Gr reported that Panathinaikos were close to signing Callum Roberts.
Now they say that former Newcastle player and now Panathinaikos Director of Football, Nikos Dabizas came to the UK and watched Roberts score in a 3-2 win at Reading (on 3 May 2019), for the NUFC Under 23s.
With claimed interest from Germany and the (English) Championship, the report goes on to say that Dabizas held talks with the player and his agent, to convince him to come to Panathinaikos ahead of other competing clubs.
The Mag – 12 April 2019:
Interesting claims from Greece today, claiming that Panathinaikos are set to sign a young Newcastle winger this summer.
Callum Roberts turns 22 on Sunday but looks to have no future at the club.
His contract ends this summer and seemingly little chance of a new one being offered, especially if Rafa Benitez is still here.
The only time Rafa has selected him, Callum Roberts actually scored in a 4-2 win earlier this season, at Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup third round replay.
In Greece, Sdna claim that Panathinaikos want the young winger this summer and that Nikos Dabizas is set to arrange the move, the former NUFC defender now Director of Football at Panathinaikos.
Callum Roberts was very impressive for Newcastle United’s Under 23s in the first half of the season.
Whilst Elias Sorensen picked up all the headlines with 19 goals for the second string, Roberts managed nine of his own, as well as numerous assists.
Heading out to Colchester on loan for the second half of the season, Callum Roberts was one of a number of young NUFC players who ended up not getting game time and Newcastle bringing them back early.
The winger was only given 37 minutes in brief sub appearances.
He certainly has ability, although almost certainly not at Premier League level, and hopefully he will find a new club if/when leaving Newcastle.
