Newcastle United send message congratulating Charlton on beating Sunderland
Newcastle United have sent out an official message on social media congratulating Lee Bowyer and Charlton on beating Sunderland.
A dramatic if low quality match seeing early disaster for the South London club after only five minutes.
Which then turned to unadulterated joy with only six seconds of the game remaining.
The play-off finals are a free hit for neutrals, especially if a (former) local rival is involved.
Newcastle fans watching on as under absolutely no pressure, Charlton defender Sarr turned and knocked the ball past his goalkeeper who was slow to react and let the ball roll past him into the bottom corner, with no Sunderland player even pressurising him.
After a disastrous league campaign that had seen Sunderland fail to win a majority of their matches and only finish fifth, it looked like they had struck lucky.
However, a negative approach saw the Mackems sit back and Purrington deservedly levelled things on 35 minutes with a close range finish after an excellent team move.
Very few chances throughout the final hour of the game, only for it to reach a point of only six seconds of the four minutes added time remaining, seeing Charlton break Sunderland hearts.
Failing to deal with a ball in from the left, Sunderland’s defence watched on as the ball fell to Bauer and he sent Charlton into the Championship.
A massive disaster for Sunderland with a huge blow to their finances, now doomed to spend a third year in their history in the third tier.
