Newcastle United Premier League 2018/19 placing mapped throughout season – Interesting
The Newcastle United Premier League placing match by match.
The story of the NUFC season mapped out match by match.
The league placing after each of the 38 PL matches.
Lee Charnley declared that 2018/19 had been a ‘good’ season for the club.
This was after the club won only one game in the two domestic cups combined…
What about the Premier League placings throughout the season though, does that back up Lee Charnley’s claim?
Table compiled by Sky Sports showing Newcastle’s 2018/19 league placings after each game:
As you can see, most of the space on the graph was irrelevant to Newcastle United!
Lee Charnley rates it a ‘good’ season when never once did Newcastle climb above 13th in the table.
After six different game did NUFC reach the heady heights of 13th but five of those came on or after 26 February 2019.
The six 13th places were after:
26 November 2018 – A 2-1 win at Burnley
26 February 2019 – A 2-0 home win over Burnley
9 March 2019 – A 3-2 home victory over Everton
20 April 2019 – A 3-1 home win over Southampton
27 April 2019 – A 1-1 draw at Brighton
12 May 2019 – Final day 4-0 win at Fulham
What maybe is the most remarkable is that despite winning none of te opening 10 games, Newcastle were only rock bottom once, after losing 1-0 at home to Brighton on 20 October 2018.
Indeed after the 27 October 2018 (0-0 draw at Southampton), quite amazing that only once Newcastle dipped back into the relegation zone, that being after the 2-1 defeat at Chelsea on 12 January 2019.
These stats above are proof as well of how fortunate Newcastle were, certainly in those early months, to have some really poor teams also at the bottom. No guarantee of that happening every season.
