Newcastle United are in talks to sign midfielder Mehdi Zerkane according to reports from France on Wednesday.

L’Equipe report that Newcastle and two French top tier clubs are interested in the player.

Zerkane turns 20 in July and looks as though he would be a proverbial ‘One for the future’ if he did sign for Newcastle.

Rafa Bentez has recruited a number of young players from various countries to try and raise the quality below first team level, with varying levels of success.

Elias Sorensen probably the biggest success so far, of those Rafa has previously recruited.

Mehdi Zerkane will be out of contract next month at Monaco and if there was any development compensation to be paid, it wouldn’t be a significant amount.

As a further indication that he would go into the Under 23s set-up rather than first team, if he did come to Newcastle, you only need to look at the fact he hasn’t even been a regular for Monaco’s reserves.

Zerkane making four starts for the French club’s reserves plus a number of appearances off the bench.

Monaco just avoided relegation this season from Ligue 1, yet Mehdi Zerkane wasn’t involved at first team level at all.
