Newcastle United take on Liverpool this Saturday night, with Rafa’s team set to play a role in the title race as potential spoilers.

Ahead of the game, the manager had mixed news on the injury front, though on the whole positive.

Rafa confirmed that Jamaal Lascelles is now back available after being ruled out of last weekend’s draw at Brighton.

As for Ayoze Perez, the NUFC boss says that when the striker returned to training this week after bouncing back from the injury that forced him off at Brighton, he is feeling pain. However, Rafa Benitez thinks he will be ok to be selected against Liverpool.

On the negative side of things, Sean Longstaff, Miguel Almiron and Florian Lejuene are still ruled out, whilst there is now a fourth injury.

DeAndre Yedlin was on the bench last weekend but the manager says he now has a groin problem which makes it four Newcastle United players ruled out in total.

Rafa Benitez also repeated what he had told the press journalists, saying that things are looking more positive on the new contract front. Nothing agreed so far but the manager saying ‘at least we are talking’ and revealing that further meetings are arranged.

Rafa Benitez talking to BBC Newcastle:

“Ayoze (Perez)  is alright, he is fine.

“It (the hip injury picked up at Brighton) was both (impact and muscular).

“He has been training, (though) with pain, but I think he will be OK.

“Jamaal is fine (after missing Brighton through injury).

“We have Yedlin with a groin problem, who is the only (new) one that is unavailable.

“If we win against Liverpool, still Manchester City can win both games and be champions anyway.

“We have to approach it like professionals.”

New contract agreement closer?:

“I was talking with Lee Charnley this week and we have been preparing some meetings.

“We will let you know.

“At least we are talking, that is positive.

“We will have some time and we will let you know where we are.”
