Newcastle fans asked will Rafa Benitez stay and has Ashley tried to keep him – Poll compared to month ago

On Saturday we asked Newcastle fans the question: ‘Will Rafa Benitez still be managing Newcastle United next season?’

This was a follow up to a month ago when we asked the same question, with slightly different wording – ‘Will Rafa Benitez still be managing Newcastle United in August 2019?’

However, in both polls, the same four options were give to Newcastle fans to vote on.

With the votes now counted for yesterday’s poll, we can compare the feeling of Newcastle fans now with a month ago.

In reality the polls of Newcastle fans were asking two questions, whether they thought Rafa would be staying at St James Park, plus also whether Mike Ashley has done ‘everything he reasonably could’ to persuade the much decorated manager to sign a new NUFC contract.

An overwhelming response with Newcastle fans voting as follows (in brackets are the percentages from four weeks ago:

3% (2%) Yes because Mike Ashley has done everything he reasonably could to persuade Rafa to stay

27% (15%) Yes, even though Mike Ashley has not done everything he reasonably could to persuade Rafa to stay

68% (82%) No because Mike Ashley has not done everything he reasonably could to persuade Rafa to stay

2% (1%) No, even though Mike Ashley has done everything he reasonably could to persuade Rafa to stay

Stripping those answers down, we had our answers to the two questions (once again the percentages from four weeks ago in brackets…

Is Rafa Benitez going to stay?

A significant 70% (83% ) saying no, with only 30% (17%) believing the Spaniard will still be at St James Park come August.

Has Mike Ashley done everything he reasonably could to persuade Rafa to stay?

A staggering 95% (97%) of Newcastle fans who voted, still believing the NUFC owner hasn’t done everything he reasonably could, with 5% (3%) believing he has.

Two big messages to take out of these results when comparing them to the mood a month ago.

The reports of Mike Ashley and Rafa Benitez at last having had talks, giving a little bit more positivity that Rafa will stay, although 30% instead of 17% isn’t exactly overwhelming numbers thinking the manager will stay.

As for whether the owner is doing everything he can to get Rafa to stay, the figure is almost exactly the same. A massive 95% believing Mike Ashley hasn’t done everything he can to avoid the disaster of the manager walking away.
