Newcastle 2 Liverpool 3  – Saturday 4 May 7.45pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us their reaction after the final whistle.

A gripping final game of the season at St James Park, Newcastle’s players and fans not deserving the defeat to that late goal from a free-kick that should never have been given.

Ben Cooper:

“Good game.

“United played well but conceded three awful goals.

“Maybe it was the quality of the opposition but I doubt it because our forwards were excellent.

“Still, again it wasn’t about us because we had nowt to play for but we played well and it was good fun.

“Liverpool love a good roll around tho.

“That was all a bit sad.”

Ryan Williamson:

“Very definitely a ‘feel good’ game to end the season (of home games) at St James Park.

“It may have ended in defeat but it was undeserved and every Newcastle fan inside the stadium appreciated the effort from Rafa and his players.

“Lame claims that Rafa/Newcastle might do the scousers a favour were about as on the mark as that terrible decision by the linesman when awarding the free-kick that led to the winning goal.

“The fact that two Liverpool subs combined for that late goal, kind of sums things up.

“Never mind the transfer cost of the first elevens, Rafa Benitez had next to nothing on his bench he could rely on to replace tiring legs.

“Muto the only change and that was after the 90 minutes had passed.

“Who knows what we will see in front of us by the time of the next competitive match at St James Park…”

David Punton:

“Such a shame to concede the winner from a dodgy free kick but that’s what tends to happen against teams that are right up there.

“What a monumental effort from the Newcastle Utd players, given that they don’t have anything to play, while the visitors are trying to win the Premier League title.

“That we pegged them at 2-2 was a real surprise and a few decisions didn’t go the w@y we would have liked.

“If our Prem status had depended on tonight then there may have been a riot.

“The defending just came up short against one of the best attacking trios in European football.

“We can argue they were soft goals if we want to get really picky.

“At full time the stadium rose to salute another Rafa Benitez miracle.

“Aside from tonight he’s delivered survival from a position of near total doom.

“The politics will start now.

“We have to hope they agree a deal.

“This is the man to lead NUFC into next season.”

Paul Patterson:

“Saying goodbye to players at 10pm on a Saturday night after a 2-3 defeat against a team that is worth £400m more than ours?

“It’s hardly the beautiful game…

Nat Seaton:

“Thought we we really unlucky not to come away with something from the game.

“They had 4 efforts on target and won 3-2.

“Our defence for most of the season has been the reason for us staying in the Premier League but it has looked a bit shaky in the last few games and our defending tonight (especially from set plays) was poor.

“We played better than I thought we could and came from behind twice against a team going for the league, the players deserve some credit for that after a long hard season for a lot of them.

“Well done lads and well done Rafa for getting us to this point, I hope you are here for many years to come…”

Toon Bano:

“Frustrating given it really should have been a red and penalty for handball on the line.

“Frustrating given it wasn’t a foul that led to the winning goal.

“Frustrating that Newcastle are a decent team made on a shoestring and could be very good with some investment.

“Frustrating that Newcastle fans will never stop going to matches so Ashley will never leave.

“Frustrating that Rafa Benitez is very likely leaving for bigger and better things.

“Frustrating being a Newcastle Utd fan your entire life.”
