Miguel Almiron makes final cut for Copa America
Miguel Almiron made an instant impact at Newcastle United, his ten PL appearances saw five wins, two draws and only three defeats, that run of form helping to carry NUFC to early Premier League safety.
His season was brought to a premature end though, picking up a hamstring injury against Southampton on 20 April.
Initially there were fears that Almiron could also miss this summer’s Copa America tournament but he was included in the provisional squad and has been training with his international teammates.
Today was the last day by which the final 23 man squads had to be announced and Miguel Almiron has been included by Paraguay.
Paraguay have a friendly against Honduras on 5 June and then another against Guatemala on 9 June.
The Copa America kicks off for Almiron’s national side on 16 June with a group game against Qatar, then Argentina (20 June) and Colombia (23 June).
The tournament doesn’t end until 7 July, so it could be a case of Almiron heading straight from international duty to link up with the Newcastle squad for pre-season, missing even the start of that (NUFC squad meet for pre-season the first week in July) unless Paraguay are knocked out of the Copa America early on.
Salomon Rondon is also set to be involved with Venezuela at the Copa America, although their final 23 man squad hasn’t been confirmed.
Meanwhile the African Cup of Nations tournament runs from 21 June to 19 July and Christian Atsu will be playing for Ghana.
The Ghana squad fly to Dubai at the start of June for a pre-tournament training camp and their group games at the African Cup of Nations are on 25 June (v Benin), 29 June (Cameroon) and 2 July (v Guinea-Bissau).
As for Fabian Schar, he has a Nations League semi-final against Portugal on Wednesday 5 June and then depending on the semi results, will play either Holland or England in the final or third/fourth place match, which will both take place on Sunday 9 June.
Martin Dubravka completes the international call-ups, he and Slovakia face jordan at home in a friendly on 7 June. They then have a European Championships qualifier on 11 June away against Azerbaijan, the game taking place in Baku, the farcical Europa League final venue where Chelsea beat Arsenal 4-1 on Wednesday night.
