Martin Tyler says Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane have long way to go to match this Newcastle pair
Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane are leading the title charge for Liverpool.
The two players have now scored 20 goals each, keeping the scousers in the title race with only two games to go.
Ahead of facing Newcastle, the two Liverpool players have been the subject of a question to Martin Tyler.
He does an excellent question and answer column for Sky Sports and has been asked this week:
‘Sadio Mane and Mo Salah have both scored 20 Premier League goals this season. How many times has this happened before that a club has had two players reach 20? Has any club had three in a season?’
“The last time a club had two players reaching 20 goals in a season was during the 2013/14 campaign, and that was also Liverpool!
“During that season the Reds went agonisingly close to ending their long wait to win the league under Brendan Rodgers and it was the goals of Luis Suarez (31) and Daniel Sturridge (21) that were mainly responsible for that title challenge.
“Liverpool will be hoping history doesn’t repeat itself again and that Mane and Salah can this time lead them to a first league title in 29 years.
“It’s only happened on two other occasions.
“First, you have to go back to the 2009/10 season when Didier Drogba (29) and Frank Lampard (22) both passed the 20-goal mark during Chelsea’s title winning campaign and before that to the 1993/94 season when Andrew Cole (34) and Peter Beardsley (21) were in the goals for Newcastle.”
Quite incredible that only three times in the Premier League era that two players have scored 20 goals or more in a season.
It also puts into sharp focus just how brilliant that Cole and Beardsley partnership was.
The fact that nobody has come close to matching their achievement sums up how good they were and should get wider recognition than that NUFC partnership actually does.
Here are the stats for other top two NUFC scorers from other seasons (1993/94 and 1994/95 were 42 game seasons, the others 38 game seasons) when Newcastle United were decent…
1993/94 – 82 goals including 55 from Andy Cole (34) and Peter Beardsley (21)
1994/95 – 67 goals including 23 from Peter Beardsley (13) and Ruel Fox (10) (Andy Cole scored 9 and left mid-season)
1995/96 – 66 goals including 33 from Les Ferdinand (25) and Robert Lee/Peter Beardsley (both scored 8 each)
1996/97 – 73 goals including 41 from Alan Shearer (25) and Les Ferdinand (16)
2001/02 – 74 goals including 32 from Alan Shearer (23) and Craig Bellamy (9)
2002/03 – 63 goals including 24 from Alan Shearer (17) and Craig Bellamy/Nobby Solano (both scored 7 each)
2003/04 – 52 goals including 29 from Alan Shearer (22) and Shola Ameobi (7)
2011/12 – 56 goals including 29 from Demba Ba (16) and Papiss Cisse (13)
