Fulham 0 Newcastle 4 – Instant United fan/writer reaction to Sunday afternoon’s win
Fulham 0 Newcastle 4 – Sunday 12 May 3pm
We asked a number of our regular writers to give us their reaction after the final whistle.
A comprehensive victory and excellent performance with some great finishing.
An ideal away trip!
“That’s it then.
“Season over and a steady 13th place with one point more than last year.
“Great performance to sign off with against an opponent that has been a pest in recent years.
“What next though?
“The Rafa question remains frustratingly unanswered and the team without Rondon is relegation stuff.
“There is no excuse at all for not sorting stuff out, we stand at a crossroads in the club’s history and I’ve just no clue where we’re heading.”
“Great win to end an interesting and improving season.
“We were excellent throughout and Shelvey even showed what he is a capable of on his good days.
“Add in the mix of positive noises around Rafa and Rondon staying and we have some hope.
“Even though we are three places worse off than last season, I feel it has been a much better campaign, certainly since November when we found a way to play.
“The next week is crucial but enjoy today.
These final day games are becoming more enjoyable nowadays.”
“A brilliant away day and a resounding 4-0 win on the banks of the Thames has brought the curtain down on another rollercoaster of a season.
“Around 1,500s Mags took the water for a pre-match booze cruise and they were rewarded with some memorable sights – and then four really good goals as Rafa’s men swatted a doomed Fulham side featuring none other than our former cult hero, a certain Mr Mitrovic. That’s another relegation for his CV.
“As ever under Mike Ashley’s ownership, we seem to stand at a perennial crossroads.
“He can make sure he secures Benitez to a deal, or he can take us into a far worse alternative reality where a new manager will have to come in and start from scratch.
“The futures of a few players are directly linked to the Benitez issue. Perez and Rondon chief among them.
“We’ll apparently know more later this week but don’t hold your breath. For the record, Rafa Benitez remains the manager until June 30.
“As for the season itself, well, it’s had some pretty bleak moments and a fair few highs too. Relegation was a constant threat until the home form got sorted out.
“We end the campaign in 13th. With the capital outlay on players that’s actually pretty good.”
“To not retain both Rafa AND Rondon would be vindictive madness.
“I expect to lose both…”
“More points than last season, more strength going forward, and some players really developing well.
“What can go wrong?
“I’ve got a horrible feeling that this is the last time we’ve seen some of our pivotal players in an NUFC top.
“The sun is shining… I’ll enjoy this end of season glow while I can!”
“A great way to sign off.
“Quite a lot of those who played a big part today probably won’t be here next season…
“Shelvey who scored a great goal, Perez, Rondon, Ritchie, the much improved Hayden and who knows, Benitez himself.
“Either way, after a very disappointing first ten games the rest of the season has been the sort of form which can see the club battling for seventh rather than battling for survival and for the fourth season in a row the team has ended the last game on a high.
“That won’t matter to Ashley but it is a glimmer of hope that if the two main parties are talking tonight then winning 4-0 away from home isn’t a bad starting point.”
“A stroll in the sun?
“Not really…but Newcastle thoroughly professional throughout!
“Great performances from back to front.
“The game raises more questions than answers though, far too many to go through.
“Sky report a smiling Mike Ashley in attendance, if only we keow what is in his mind!
“Bigger points total than last season despite an awful start to season, take out first 10 games and we are actually top 6 or 7.
“Plenty reasons to be optimistic but equally as many to be nervous!”
“What a way to end the season.
“Going to one of my favourite away grounds, beer, sun and FOUR goals!!!
“I’m going to enjoy the feeling for now as who knows what the future will hold at NUFC.
“Here’s Hoping it’s a future with Rafa in charge and some new talent on show come August, I can but dream…”
“Rafa must stay.
“Ashley must go.”
