Former top referee rules on Newcastle 2 Liverpool 3 controversial incident
Dermot Gallagher reviews controversial decisions in the Premier League after each round of games, on behalf of Sky Sports, and has given his call on an incident in the Newcastle 2 Liverpool 3 match.
The former top referee looking at the passage of play that ended with Christian Atsu equalising in the 20th minute.
Salomon Rondon seeing his shot blocked by a deliberate handball from Trent Alexander-Arnold on the goalline, with play continuing and eventually Christian Atsu scoring.
Dermot Gallagher thinks referee Andre Marriner called it both right and wrong.
Gallagher states that Marriner called it right in not sending the Liverpool defender off, the reasoning being that to be a sending off it would have had to be denying a goal, but this wasn’t the case because Atsu scored before the referee could blow his whistle.
However, the former top referee says that Andre Marriner did get it wrong in not booking Alexander-Arnold. That offence being handball, rather than denying a goal.
Dermot Gallagher speaking to Sky Sports:
“Matt Ritchie’s ball inside was turned towards goal by Salomon Rondon and struck Trent Alexander-Arnold’s arm on the goal line.
“Play was allowed to continue as Christian Atsu converted the rebound.”
Dermot Gallagher verdict:
“Correct, but Alexander-Arnold should have been booked.”
Dermot Gallagher says:
“The offence he would have been guilty of was denying a goal – but that didn’t happen, as Atsu scored from the rebound.
“The referee hasn’t got time to whistle to give a penalty.
“What would have put a lid on it would have been if Alexander-Arnold was yellow carded for handball.
“For some reason, the referee didn’t book him – that’s the only punishment he could have received.
“He hasn’t denied a goal, so the referee can’t send him off.
“It was fortuitous for both, as would Newcastle want a goal chalked off?”
