Faultless Newcastle United win their Hong Kong Soccer Sevens group without conceding a goal

The Hong Kong Soccer Sevens are back, with Newcastle United looking to defend their title.

This year’s competition takes place this weekend from Friday 17 May to Sunday 19 May, with Newcastle kicking off their participation on Saturday morning local time (Hong Kong are seven hours ahead of the UK so the group games were early hours of Saturday morning).

Newcastle United’s under 23s won the Hong Kong Soccer Sevens in 2012 and then repeated that success in May 2018.

They beat Leicester City in the semis in 2018 and Glasgow Rangers in the final, both matches high drama as United won with a golden goal in both games.

Newcastle winger Victor Fernandez also picked up the player of the tournament award.

The young Magpies were in Group C and faced three group games against the Kerry Yau Yee League Select, Kashima Antlers and Brighton today (Saturday).

Group games are seven minutes each way, rising to 10 minutes each way in Sunday’s closing stages.

Kicking off the competition was a contest against Kerry Yau Yee League Select, which Newcastle won 1-0 thanks to a Kelland Watts goal.

Next up was Japanese side Kashima Antlers.

A tight game and no score at half-time, then with just over two minutes remaining on the clock though, it was prolific goalscorer Elias Sorensen who won the game.

His initial effort coming back off the bar but the Dane’s predatory talent showing, as he volleyed home with his left foot (watch his goal here).

The final group match saw Newcastle play out a goalless draw with Brighton, this ensured Newcastle finished top of the group with seven points, Brighton second on four points, then the other two team tied exactly on three points and the same goal difference.

Newcastle progress now to Sunday’s quarter-finals, with opposition to be confirmed.

A very professional job, as the NUFC Under 23s top their group with two wins and a draw, plus they didn’t concede a single goal.
