Claims unmasked of plucky poor underdogs Liverpool challenging against the odds
Liverpool arrive on Tyneside this Saturday night.
Should be a laugh.
As Newcastle fans we have everything to gain and nothing to lose, apart from Rafa that is…
However, what about the visitors?
A few weeks ago there was stuff in the media talking about Newcastle fans being keen on Liverpool winning the Premier League.
This actually produced a big backlash, with many Newcastle supporters claiming the very last thing they wanted was for Liverpool to win it.
For me, there is no special pro/anti Liverpool vibe amongst Newcastle fans.
We simply want NUFC to win all of the time and everybody else to lose and be miserable, whether it is Liverpool, Manchester City or whoever.
One thing though that I do find ridiculous about Liverpool, is this storyline we are supposed to believe, whereby they are some kind of plucky underdog who are trying to succeed against all the odds supposedly stacked against them.
A few things…
This is a table of the Premier League wage bills for last season, as prepared by football finance expert Swiss Ramble. See who is second, above Manchester City, and not far off Man Utd at the very top:
As for signing players…
£54m Naby Keita
£76m Virgil van Dijk
£38m Mo Salah
£34m Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
£37m Sadio Mane
£25m Gini Wijnaldum
£38m Robert Firminio
£28m Adam Lallana
£23m Dejan Lovren
I have no idea on whether Liverpool have any injuries or not but potentially they could put out a team that cost £450m!
Adding on the bench, I’m guessing that could take their 18 man matchday squad to costing around £600m…
The above info surely tells you that Liverpool are right up there with any/every club, not just in England, but anywhere in the World, when it comes to expectations of being able to compete.
Meanwhile, in the never ending reign of Ashley austerity, Rafa Benitez could very well be putting out this £33m Newcastle team against the plucky Liverpool underdogs…
Dubravka (£4m), Manquillo (£4m), Schar (£3m), Lascelles (£4m), Dummett (£0), Ritchie (£12m), Hayden (£4m), Ki (£0), Kenedy (£0), Perez (£2m), Rondon (£0)
Howay the lads!
