As Mike Ashley set to move him out Salomon Rondon says he’s ‘honoured’ to be player of the year

Salomon Rondon has reacted to being named the official Newcastle United player of the year.

The club having announced earlier today that the Venezuelan striker was the latest winner of the award.

Back in early March, Salomon Rondon revealed that he had met with club officials and he’d made clear what Mike Ashley needed to do if he was to be a Newcastle United player once again next season.

The loan striker saying that he was desperate for a permanent deal to be done but if it didn’t happen, he would say thanks very much and move on.

On Thursday afternoon, the NUFC forward has said ‘I feel really honoured’ to pick up the award, adding it is a ‘real privilege’ to do so.

The modest 29 year old says he owes the award to his teammates and the Newcastle fans.

Salomon Rondon has been directly involved in 47% of Newcastle’s Premier League goals this season and yet Mike Ashley is set to happily let the team’s most influential player walk away, simply because he is the ‘wrong’ age for his cunning plan.

If Mike Ashley is  happy for both Rafa Benitez and Salomon Rondon to walk away, the NUFC owner has taken things to a whole new level of stupidity.

Salomon Rondon via his Twitter account:

“I feel really honoured to have been named Newcastle United’s Player of the Year.

“A real privilege!

“I owe the award to my teammates and you Magpies who’ve battled all the way with us.

“Thank you for the amazing support at St. James’ Park!!

“Howay the Lads!!”

The Mag – Earlier today (9 May 2019):

Salomon Rondon has been named Official 2018/19 Newcastle United player of the year.

The club revealing the award on Thursday morning.

The striker follows Ciaran Clark and Jamaal Lascelles in winning the award in the three full seasons Rafa Benitez has been at the club.

The full list of previous winners named below.

No information as to how the selection is made but in their official statement, Newcastle United point out that Salomon Rondon has been directly involved (scoring or assisting) in 47% of NUFC’s Premier League goals.

Many Newcastle fans will find it ironic/amusing, that the club are shouting out how good and influential Rondon has been, yet Mike Ashley seemingly has zero intention in trying to sign him permanently.

Only at Newcastle United.

Newcastle United announcement:

‘Salomón Rondón has been named as Newcastle United’s official Player of the Year for the 2018/19 campaign.

The Venezuelan frontman joined the Magpies on loan from West Bromwich Albion at the start of the season, and has since found the net 11 times in 32 appearances.

In the Premier League alone, Rondón has been involved in 47 per cent of United’s goals, having contributed eight assists in addition to his ten top-flight strikes.

He takes over the gong from skipper Jamaal Lascelles, and becomes the first forward to win the award since Alan Shearer in the 2002/03 campaign.
