Dwight Gayle had a busy April.

The Newcastle loan striker picking up another six goals for West Brom, as he helped cement their place in the play-offs.

On Saturday Gayle picked up two awards (see below) from West Brom fans before the 2-1 win over Rotherham, the supporters voting him player of the year and the scorer of goal of the season.

Thursday morning has now seen Dwight Gayle confirmed as one of the nominations for April’s Championship player of the month.

He is up against Jayden Bogle (Derby), Jack Grealish (Villa) and Daniel James (Swansea).

Those half dozen goals in April have taken Dwight Gayle to 23 league goals for the season, teammate Jay Rodriguez scored his 22nd on Saturday, meaning Gayle is still favourite to walk away with West Brom’s top scorer award as well.

Whether the idea will be to keep or sell Dwight Gayle, having loan players in form can only be good for Newcastle as well as their loan clubs.

Official west Brom site:

‘Dwight Gayle has been shortlisted for the Sky Bet Championship Player of the Month for April.

The in-form striker netted six goals during the period, helping Albion to three wins and a draw.

The 29-year-old grabbed his second hat-trick of the campaign in a 4-1 win over Preston before firing his third brace in the 3-2 victory against Hull City – taking his total for the season to 23.

Gayle has been nominated alongside Jayden Bogle (Derby), Jack Grealish (Villa) and Daniel James (Swansea).

The judging panel comprises Sky Sports’ Don Goodman; League Managers’ Association Director Olaf Dixon and Sky Bet EFL Trader Ivor Davies, with the winner set to be confirmed on Friday.’

The Mag – 27 April 2019:

Dwight Gayle has played a massive part in ensuring West Brom have already qualified for the Championship play-offs.

The Newcastle loan striker scoring 23 goals from 31 Championship starts before Saturday’s match.

Matching the 23 he scored (26 starts) for Newcastle in 2016/17.

Today it was revealed that Dwight Gayle is player of the year after West Brom fans voted him top of an official poll.

Whilst Baggies fans also voted the NUFC loan player as having scored the goal of the season, a strike against Stoke earlier this season.

Dwight Gayle is on 23 goals, two goals ahead of  Jay Rodriguez, so could pick up that top scorer honour as well.

That is all the more impressive when you consider Gayle has also won most of the eight penalties Rodriguez has taken this season.

Official West Brom site:

‘Strikers Dwight Gayle and Jay Rodriguez claimed the top gongs when Albion’s end-of-season awards were handed out at The Hawthorns on Saturday afternoon.

Leading scorer Dwight was named Coral Supporters’ Player of the Season from an online poll, while his partner in goals J-Rod earned the plaudits of his team-mates, taking the Players’ Player of the Season.

Albion legend Tony Brown, a man who knows a thing or two about scoring, came pitchside before kick-off in the SkyBet Championship clash with Rotherham to hand over their awards.

Dwight nipped ahead of his strike partner by also winning the Ideal Boilers Goal of the Season award. Again, a fans’ vote decided his memorable first goal against Stoke City in the 2-1 home victory in September was the pick of some cracking finishes from the Baggies this season.

Other awards saw Rekeem Harper named as Albion’s Young Player of the Season while our rising young talent Morgan Rogers picked up the Academy Player of the Season just 24 hours before joining up with England for the UEFA U17 European Championships in Ireland.

And another of Albion’s budding young talents, Kyle Edwards, received the Community award for his outstanding contribution to the Club’s initiatives in the local area.

That leaves just one award to be settled – top goalscorer – which will see Dwight and Jay-Rod go head-to-head once more.

Dwight went in to today’s game on 23 goals with his partner just two goals behind.’
