Amazing the difference £295m can make – Newcastle United and Liverpool comparison

Before Saturday night’s match, I did a Liverpool comparison with Newcastle United.

My starting point was that I find it ridiculous, this storyline whereby the scousers are some kind of plucky underdog who are trying to succeed against all the odds supposedly stacked against them.

I pointed out a few things.

Starting with wages.

Rafa Benitez has repeatedly said that Mike Ashley has to allow Newcastle to compete more in terms of both transfer fees and wages.

You don’t expect Newcastle’s to be close to the top six but the reality is, that we should be competing at a relatively higher level to attract better players.

This is a table of the Premier League wage bills for last season, as prepared by football finance expert Swiss Ramble.

Saturday night’s match really summing this up.

Liverpool’s wage bill almost three times as high as Newcastle’s.

Liverpool are second, above Manchester City, and not far off Man Utd at the very top:

As for signing players…

I pointed out that Liverpool, if everybody was fit, could put out a team that cost them at least £450m in transfer fees.

The reality was ‘only’ £334m…

£56m Alisson

£0 Alexander-Arnold

£23m Dejan Lovren

£76m van Dijk

£8m Robertson

£16m Henderson

£41m Fabinho

£25m Wijnaldum

£38m Salah

£14m Sturridge

£37m Mane

As for Newcastle United, my predicted team cost £33m in transfer fees.

I had Kenedy (£0) in my predicted team but Atsu (£6m) played instead, boosting the transfer fee cost to £39m!

Liverpool’s team last night costing just £5m shy of TEN times as much as Newcastle’s starting eleven.

Dubravka (£4m)

Manquillo (£4m)

Schar (£3m)

Lascelles (£4m)

Dummett (£0)

Ritchie (£12m)

Hayden (£4m)

Ki (£0)

Atsu (£6m)

Perez (£2m)

Rondon (£0)
