Alan Shearer spells it out for Mike Ashley – Couldn’t make it any clearer…

Alan Shearer thinks Newcastle United are at a crossroads…just for a change.

The final day of the season saw his club the day’s most convincing winners in the Premier League, a 4-0 away win at Fulham.

After final whistle the NUFC legend tweeted: ‘Well done Rafa Benitez. Well done lads…and to the thousands that travelled to Fulham today, you were brilliant as usual.’

Later on Sunday night, Match of The Day predictably had their A team working.

Alan Shearer and Ian Wright alongside Gary Lineker, in the main to talk about the conclusion of a dramatic title race, but Shearer obviously always going to deliver headlines as well when discussing the situation as it now stands at St James Park.

The former number nine laid it on the line, saying  Newcastle United ‘need to keep Rafa at all costs’ and if it was him, it’s a no-brainer to keep player of the season Salomon Rondon.

The very fact that neither manager or player of the season have a clue whether they will be still at St James Park, is laughable.

The fact that Mike Ashley has done nothing so far to try and keep either, is not so funny.

With the futures of both Rafa Benitez and Salomon Rondon at Newcastle appearing to be intrinsically linked, it looks to be an all or nothing choice. If Ashley is happy for them to walk away, it would be arguably his biggest own goal so far, which is saying something judged by what he has done before at NUFC.

Alan Shearer talking on Match of The Day:

“I was very happy watching that performance today…but they need to sort his (Rafa Benitez’) future out.

“They need to keep Rafa at all costs.

“A wonderful strike from Shelvey gets them off to a great start, then the best three players of the season for Newcastle: Perez, Schar and Rondon, were all involved, scoring the goals.

“A very good performance.

“It’s now 24 goals (23 actually in Premier League (12 Perez, 11 Rondon) plus one each for them in the cups) between Rondon and Perez now.

“Perez an excellent season and Rondon got player of the season – rightly so.

“Whether they get him (buy Rondon on a permanent deal), whether they want to pay that money, that is a different matter.

“If it was me I would do that because he has been excellent.

“First and foremost though, they need to sort out Rafa’s future.

“They need to keep him.”
