Why Newcastle United London hoodoo is relative red herring based on dodgy statistics
The Newcastle United London hoodoo has reared its ugly head once again.
Tonight’s visit to Arsenal seeing the various statistics trotted out.
Newcastle having lost more Premier League games in London than any other club.
However, how true is the Newcastle United London hoodoo storyline?
Back in the day, failing to win in 29 London games was shocking, until December 2001 when Sir Bobby’s team won at Arsenal in that 3-1 game.
What about the situation now and overall?
The stat that says Newcastle have lost more London Premier League matches is true…but doesn’t tell the whole story.
It would be a bit difficult for the likes of Huddersfield, Burnley, Brighton, Bournemouth, Cardiff and many others to have lost more London games than NUFC, seen as they have not been in the top tier much in this Premier League era.
Little surprise that it is Everton who have had the next highest number of PL defeats in London, one less than Newcastle.
They have been in the Premier League for all 27 seasons, Newcastle for 24. I’m guessing that outside the ‘big six’ there is probably only Villa and the odd other one that have been in as often as NUFC.
The thing is as well, that the past decade or so has seen three London clubs (Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs) amongst that dominant top six, so little wonder Newcastle might struggle to get results away at those clubs, although even then Newcastle have won three of their last six PL matches against Spurs.
Last season (2017/18) there were only two other London clubs and Newcastle won 3-2 at West Ham and got a 1-1 draw at Palace.
This time there have been one goal margin defeat at Chelsea and Spurs, a draw at Palace, with Arsenal and Fulham still to play.
As things stand now, so long as Newcastle stay up, the only London clubs will be those same five, as Fulham are gong down and no clubs from the capital in the promotion race.
If you are going to say a Newcastle United London Hoodoo, maybe you should also feel obliged to say a Manchester/Liverpool Hoodoo as well.
Since promotion in 2010, Newcastle’s away record at Liverpool, Everton, Man Utd and Man City shows Played 32 Won 2 Drawn 6 Lost 24 Goals scored 26 Goals conceded 82.
As I say above, NUFC have won three times at Tottenham in 2013, 2014 and 2015, never mind the other London grounds, yet since 20190 promotion, Newcastle have only got that 1-0 victory at Old Trafford in 2013 (Cabaye) and the 1-0 victory at Everton in 2010 (Ben Arfa) as wins in Manchester or Liverpool.
It is far worse than that actually…
Only one league win at Manchester United since 1972.
No Premier League win at Anfield since 1994.
One league win at Goodison since 2001.
No wins at Man City since 2000.
London might not have been much fun for Newcastle fans when it comes to results but trips to Liverpool and Manchester in the Premier League have actually been even worse!
