West Ham ‘Insider’ reveals Jonjo Shelvey deal only ’50/50′ despite Manuel Pellegrini rating him
An interesting update on the future of Jonjo Shelvey from the West Ham end.
A boyhood supporter, Shelvey will be looking for a new club this summer and the Hammers have long been linked with him.
The only possible way the midfielder could still be at St James Park come August, is if Rafa Benitez isn’t.
The Newcastle boss making clear there isn’t a first team future for him at Newcastle, preferring Longstaff, Diame, Hayden and Ki ahead of the former England international.
National journalist Hugh Southon also runs the respected Claret and Hugh independent West Ham website and they have provided an update on the chances of Jonjo Shelvey potentially joining the East London club this summer.
They have connections to the hierarchy at West Ham and say they have been told that the club’s owners are still waiting to get the transfer wishlist from the manager and Director of Football. Though they do say Manuel Pellegrini is a fan of Shelvey’s.
However, before any West Ham move, they say that injury concerns will have to be allayed.
The Hammers have been badly burnt when taking on the likes of Jack Wilshere (four Premier League starts this season) and Andy Carroll (three PL starts this season and only 62 in the last six years) on massive wages, and in the case of Andy Carroll, a sizeable transfer fee as well.
When Jonjo Shelvey last started a Premier League match, Newcastle had so far failed to win a PL game this season.
He started that 1-0 win over Watford on 3 November but hasn’t been named by Rafa Benitez since then in a Premier League starting eleven.
Five and a half months later and he is pretty much totally sidelined.
Back to fitness a couple of months ago, Shelvey has had only 32 PL minutes on the pitch in brief sub appearances and was struggling to make even the bench until injuries to the likes of Longstaff, Diame and Ki.
After three and a half years on Tyneside, it looks time to move on for Jonjo Shelvey, whether that destination is West Ham remains to be seen.
Claret and Hugh report:
‘Reports that Jonjo Shelvey has held showdown talks with Rafa Benitez over his future will re-ignite speculation that West Ham could move in on the midfielder.
Shelvey has of course been regularly linked with the Irons…
Manuel Pellegrini is known to like the 27 year old but a Hammers move remains no better than 50/50 or less given his injury record this season.
An Irons insider has made it clear to ClaretandHugh via text message that they will be making no moves at all until Manuel Pellegrini and director of football Mario Husillos present them with their list of preferred players in the summer.
That is normal procedure under any manager but with the likes of Andy Carroll and Jack Wilshere part of the Hammers recent history, enormous care will be taken on new arrivals.’
