The Newcastle United players that fans would most like to keep for next (2019/20) season
Who are the Newcastle United players you would most like to see still at St James Park next season?
It is an overwhelming opinion as to keeping Rafa Benitez but what about the players?
Recently, we asked a number of regular writers/contributors for The Mag a number of topical questions.
One of those questions was:
‘The 11 Newcastle players you would most like to see still at the club next season (including players currently on loan), list them in order of importance:’
These were the choices made:
Schar, Dubravka, Almiron, Rondon, Longstaff, Ritchie, Lejeune, Lascelles, Hayden, Perez, Shelvey (Billy Miller’s choice)
Dubravka, Rondon, Almiron, Lascelles, Ritchie, Schar, Fernandez (Jonathan Drape-Comyn – could only name seven he wanted to keep)
Dubravka, Longstaff, Almiron, Rondon, Schar, Lascelles, Lejeune, Dummett, Shelvey, Perez (Jamie Smith – Only named 10)
Rondon, Dubravka, Almiron, Lejeune, Perez, Lascelles, Longstaff, Dummett, Schar, Woodman, Ritchie (Matthew Norton)
Rondon, Perez, Lascelles, Dubravka, Longstaff, Almiron, Schar, Shelvey, Dummett, Atsu, Ritchie (David Punton)
Longstaff, Almiron, Dubravka, Schar, Lascelles, Lejuene, Rondon, Ritchie, Shelvey, Perez, Yedlin (Brian Standen)
Rondon, Almiron, Schär, Longstaff, Dubravka, Lejeune, Dummett, Hayden, Fernandez, Shelvey, Lascelles (Davey Hat-Trick)
Longstaff, Lejeune, Schar, Lascelles, Dummett, Almiron, Rondon, Dubravka, Ritchie, Shelvey, Fernandez (Steve Hickey)
Obviously this is only eight writers/fans opinion but it does give us a snapshot of what a small cross-section of Newcastle supporters think about this team/squad.
Using the responses above I have listed the Newcastle United players below, from most wanted to least wanted for next season.
I gave a rating/number for each of them based on 1 for first choice through to 11 for last choice, if no player was included on a writer’s list they got a 12.
So here are the ratings, with obviously lowest numbers equalling best:
26 Martin Dubravka
27 Salomon Rondon
28 Miguel Amiron
37 Sean Longstaff
38 Fabian Schar
47 Jamaal Lascelles
56 Florian Lejeune
73 Paul Dummett
73 Ayoze Perez
74 Matt Ritchie
81 Jonjo Shelvey
87 Federico Fernandez
89 Isaac Hayden
94 Freddie Woodman
94 Christian Atsu
95 DeAndre Yedlin
Players who weren’t chosen at all by anybody were: Ki, Diame, Muto, Kenedy, Manquillo, Joselu, Barreca, Darlow, Elliot, Clark
It is a small small sample of opinions but I do think it fits in with what I am generally hearing when speaking to other Newcastle fans.
There is that quintet at the top (Dubravka, Almiron, Rondon, Longstaff, Schar) who stand out well ahead of the rest.
Then Lejeune and Lascelles are at the next level.
Before you then get to Dummett, Perez, Ritchie, Shelvey, Fernandez and Hayden.
I think the only anomaly is that in other circumstances Isaac Hayden would have been a lot higher up the list after his excellent form – but fans/writers recognising that due to personal circumstances he needs to leave this summer.
